How the ISA allowance works
- You can pay up to £20,000 into ISAs in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, split between the types however you like.
- A Lifetime ISA takes up to £4,000 of that. The government adds a 25% bonus, and the bonus does not count towards your allowance.
- Money you take out and put back in usually counts again, unless your ISA is a flexible one.
- Any allowance you don't use is lost when the tax year ends on 5 April. It does not carry over.
- Shares in a stocks and shares ISA are free of dividend tax and capital gains tax.
