How capital gains tax on shares works
- Add up your gains for the tax year and take off your losses.
- The first £3,000 of gains is tax free (your annual allowance).
- Gains that fit in what is left of your basic rate band are taxed at 18%. The rest is taxed at 24%.
- Higher and additional rate taxpayers pay 24% on all taxable gains.
- Shares in an ISA or pension are free of capital gains tax.
The calculator is a guide for simple share sales. It does not handle the share matching rules for shares bought and sold within 30 days, or Scottish income tax bands. If either applies, check with HMRC or an accountant.
