WEDNESDAY 19 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 19 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,463.05 | Change: +119.65 (+0.22%) | Range: 53,399.53 - 53,710.06
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow snapped a three-day losing streak, closing at 53,463.05, up +119.65 points (+0.22%). Session range was 53,399.53 to 53,710.06, a 310.53 point span. Open was 53,463.47, so the index finished fractionally below its own open and in the bottom 21% of the daily range after fading 247 points off the intraday high.
Two drivers dominated. First, the Treasury announced an expanded buyback programme for longer-dated debt, pulling the 30-year yield down eight basis points to 5.20% and the 10-year to 4.65% (-1.13%). Falling yields lifted rate-sensitive cyclicals. Second, the July FOMC minutes landed hawkish - several members favoured raising rates at the last meeting and flagged further hikes if inflation does not ease. That capped the rally into the close.
Sector split was stark: healthcare surged on the Merck / Moderna melanoma vaccine readout, while banks and industrials were sold. VIX fell 6.0% to 14.89, showing no real fear despite the choppy tape.
Overall bias: BULLISH on the primary trend, CORRECTIVE short term. Net stance for the next session: NEUTRAL with a mild downside tilt while price holds under 53,710.
TREND
EMA stack: EMA20 53,287.02 | EMA50 52,450.23 | EMA200 49,759.36
Close 53,463.05 is above all three moving averages, so the strict classification is Bull (above all). The stack itself remains in perfect bullish alignment (20 above 50 above 200), and the EMA20 is still rising. That is the primary trend and it has not been broken.
Market structure: Since the all-time high of 54,744.33 on 5 August, the index has printed a clean sequence of lower highs and lower lows - 54,744 then 54,502 then 54,222 then 54,049 then 53,890 then 53,663 then 53,710. Price sits 1,281 points, or 2.34%, below the record. Today's high of 53,710.06 was a marginal higher high versus Tuesday but failed to hold, so the LH sequence is intact.
Phase: Corrective pullback / consolidation inside a Stage 2 uptrend. This is a two-week distributive drift, not a trend reversal. A reversal would require a daily close under the EMA20 followed by a failed retest, and neither has happened yet.
One structural detail worth noting: the 4 August breakaway gap between 53,230.08 and 53,641.21 is still open below. Price has spent the last three sessions inside it. Full fill sits at 53,230.
INDICATORS
RSI(14): 55.3, up from 53.8 on Tuesday. Neutral-constructive. The five-session path is 60.3, 61.0, 59.4, 55.5, 53.8, 55.3 - momentum cooled from the August high but has stabilised above 50, which is the bull/bear line. No bearish divergence is present at the highs: the 5 August price peak coincided with the RSI peak, so this is a normal momentum unwind rather than a distribution signal.
MACD: MACD line 376.45, signal 437.98, histogram -61.53. The histogram sequence over the last five sessions is +67.52, +37.21, -5.38, -43.45, -61.53 - a bearish crossover three sessions ago and the negative bar is still widening. Important nuance: both lines remain well above the zero line, so this is deceleration within an uptrend, not a trend flip. A close below zero on the MACD line would be the genuine warning.
Volume: 450.95 million against a 20-day average of 478.86 million, roughly 5.8% below average. A green day on below-average volume, with a close near the session low, is not conviction buying. The advance lacks sponsorship.
Volatility: ATR(14) is 490.95 points. That is the daily expected range and it should frame every stop placement below. VIX at 14.89, down 6.0%, sits comfortably in complacency territory.
KEY LEVELS
Resistance
R1 53,663 - 53,710 - today's high plus the 17 August high. Immediate cap and the most important level on the chart. A daily close above it breaks the lower-high sequence.
R2 53,839 - 53,890 - the 13 August close and 14 August high. Prior consolidation shelf.
R3 54,049 - 54,072 - the 13 and 10 August highs. Reclaiming this reopens the record.
Record high: 54,744.33 (5 August).
Support
S1 53,395 - 53,400 - a near-perfect double low (17 August 53,395.23, today 53,399.53). The line in the sand for bulls.
S2 53,256 - 53,287 - the 18 August low stacked on the rising EMA20. Strong confluence.
S3 53,178 - 53,230 - the 3 August high and close, and the point of full fill of the 4 August breakaway gap. Losing this changes the character of the pullback.
Deeper: EMA50 at 52,450.
Classic pivots (from today's bar)
Pivot: 53,524.21 || S2 53,213.69 - S1 53,338.37 || R1 53,648.90 - R2 53,834.74
Camarilla
Cam: S4 53,292.26 - S3 53,377.66 - S1 53,434.59 || R1 53,491.52 - R3 53,548.45 - R4 53,633.84
Round numbers: 53,500 (immediately overhead, and price closed just under it), 53,000 (major psychological floor and roughly where the gap fill and prior breakout converge), 54,000 (the ceiling of the current corrective range).
NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
Strongest - above all three EMAs
MRK 152.20 +12.60% - the day's story. Merck and partner Moderna reported the first-ever positive Phase 3 readout for an individualised mRNA cancer therapy. Intismeran autogene plus Keytruda hit its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival in high-risk melanoma and also cleared the distant metastasis-free survival secondary. Daiwa upgraded to Outperform with a 143 dollar target, JPMorgan lifted to 150 dollars.
CRM 206.09 +5.07% - just reclaimed the EMA200 at 202.19. Fresh technical breakout, worth watching for follow-through.
AMGN 442.36 +4.02% - healthcare sympathy bid, extended above all EMAs.
DIS 106.93 +2.87% - pushed back above the EMA200 at 104.61.
AMZN 265.84 +2.46% - constructive, holding above a rising EMA20 at 261.10.
Weakest
CAT 816.15 -2.94% - Bear (below 20/50), sitting 60 points under its EMA50 at 876.94. The industrial complex was the day's funding source.
HON 221.73 -2.63% - Bear (below all). EMA20 234.89, EMA50 234.75, EMA200 227.48. The weakest structure in the index.
GS 1,021.65 -1.81% - Bear (below 20/50). Hawkish minutes hit the banks.
JPM 357.26 -1.65% - still Bull (above all) but only just, with the EMA20 at 356.07 right underneath. A break there turns the largest bank negative.
UNH 388.61 -1.35% - Bear (below 20/50), notably left behind by the healthcare rally.
Also below all EMAs and structurally poor: MCD 267.45, PG 144.38 and NKE 41.05 - the defensive consumer block is broadly broken despite green tape today.
Read-through: breadth was narrow and thematic. One pharma headline delivered most of the Dow's 119 points. Strip out MRK and AMGN and the index closes red. That is a low-quality advance.
TRADE SETUPS
SWING LONG - Double-bottom and EMA20 defence
The 53,395 to 53,400 double low plus the rising EMA20 at 53,287 forms the highest-probability demand shelf on the chart. Buy weakness into it, not strength.
Entry: 53,350 · Stop: 53,150 · T1: 53,710 · T2: 53,970 · R:R: 1.8 / 3.1
Stop is 200 points, roughly 0.4x ATR, placed under the full gap fill at 53,230.
Kill condition: any daily close below 53,150. That fills the 4 August gap and loses the EMA20 on a closing basis, which invalidates the entire bullish structure.
SWING SHORT - Lower-high continuation
The LH sequence from the 5 August record is intact and today's fade off 53,710 confirmed sellers are working that shelf.
Entry: 53,690 on rejection · Stop: 53,900 · T1: 53,400 · T2: 53,230 · R:R: 1.4 / 2.2
Requires an actual rejection wick or bearish reversal candle at the level - do not sell the level blind.
Kill condition: daily close above 53,890. That breaks the lower-high chain and puts 54,050 back in play.
INTRADAY LONG - Camarilla R3 reclaim
Price closed just under the 53,500 round number and Cam R3 at 53,548. Reclaiming both signals the fade is being bought back.
Entry: 53,550 on a 15-minute close above · Stop: 53,430 · T1: 53,710 · T2: 53,835 · R:R: 1.3 / 2.4
Kill condition: 15-minute close back under Cam R1 at 53,491.
INTRADAY SHORT - Double-low break
Losing 53,399 breaks a two-session floor with limited structure beneath until the EMA20.
Entry: 53,385 on the break · Stop: 53,480 · T1: 53,292 · T2: 53,180 · R:R: 1.0 / 2.2
Tight 95-point stop, so size accordingly. T1 is Cam S4 and the EMA20 zone, T2 is the gap fill.
Kill condition: a fast reclaim of 53,480 within two 15-minute bars - that is a bear trap.
Risk note: with ATR at 491 and Jackson Hole opening, position size should be reduced. Wide stops on small size beat tight stops on full size into event risk.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Thursday 20 August
13:30 UK / 08:30 ET - Initial Jobless Claims. The labour market is the swing factor in the hike-versus-cut debate after today's minutes.
13:30 UK / 08:30 ET - Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index. Relevant given CAT and HON weakness.
15:00 UK / 10:00 ET - Conference Board Leading Economic Index.
Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 August
Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. The single largest risk on the calendar. The Fed Chair keynote is traditionally Friday morning and, with July minutes revealing several members favoured a hike, any hawkish confirmation from the podium is a direct threat to the 53,400 shelf. Expect thin, jumpy liquidity Thursday afternoon into Friday.
Friday 21 August
14:45 UK / 09:45 ET - S&P Global Flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs. First read on August activity.
Ongoing
Treasury long-dated buyback operations. Today's announcement drove the bid in 30-year paper and was the proximate cause of the equity bounce. Further detail here moves yields, and yields are currently moving the Dow.
Healthcare follow-through. Watch whether MRK and AMGN hold their gains. A give-back there removes the only real engine the index had today.
Geopolitics: nothing scheduled that is market-moving inside 48 hours. The dominant risk is monetary policy, not headlines.
SUMMARY
A technically weak green day. The Dow remains above all three EMAs with the stack correctly aligned, so the primary uptrend is intact and should be respected. But the close was near the session low on below-average volume, MACD momentum is negative and widening, breadth was carried almost entirely by one pharma headline, and the lower-high sequence off the 5 August record has not been broken.
The whole picture reduces to two numbers. 53,710 on the upside - a daily close above it ends the correction. 53,395 on the downside - a daily close below it opens the 53,230 gap fill and the EMA20 test. Between them, the tape is a coin flip and the correct stance is patience.
Jackson Hole decides which one breaks.

TUESDAY 18 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 18 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,343.40 | Change: -116.38 (-0.22%) | Range: 53,256.34 - 53,478.76
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow closed at 53,343.40, down 116.38 points (-0.22%), a second consecutive down day and the fourth loss in five sessions. The index gapped lower at the open (53,354.43 against Monday's 53,459.78 close) and spent the entire session below the prior close - a weak internal signature even though the headline loss was modest.
Session range was just 222 points against a 14-day ATR of 500, so this was a low-energy grind rather than a liquidation. Volume came in at 429m versus a 20-day average of 479m, roughly 10% light. Selling pressure exists but conviction behind it does not.
Drivers: long-end yields did the damage. The 30-year is around 5.32%, its highest since 2007, and the 10-year around 4.73%, the highest this year. Crude added a second headwind with Brent near $91 and WTI near $84 after fresh US pressure on Iran. AI and semiconductor names were sold hard - the Nasdaq fell 1.3% against the Dow's 0.22%, and the Dow's defensive weighting is the only reason it outperformed.
Overall bias: MIXED - the primary uptrend is intact but the short-term structure has turned corrective. Tactically cautious, strategically constructive.
TREND
EMA stack: Close 53,343.40 vs EMA20 53,268.50, EMA50 52,408.88, EMA200 49,644.13.
Price is above all three EMAs, so the strict classification is BULLISH (above all). That said, the margin over the EMA20 is only 74.9 points - about 0.14% - and today's low at 53,256.34 traded through the 20-day. The bull classification is technically true but hanging by a thread. The 20/50/200 stack itself remains correctly ordered (20 > 50 > 200) with a wide 2,765-point gap between the 50 and 200, which is the clearest evidence the medium-term uptrend has not been damaged.
Market structure: Since the 5 August all-time high at 54,744.33 the index has printed an unbroken sequence of lower highs and lower lows:
Highs: 54,744.33 (5 Aug) - 54,502.87 - 54,222.85 - 54,049.14 - 53,890.84 - 53,663.11 - 53,478.76 (18 Aug)
Lows: 53,835.02 (6 Aug) - 53,746.43 - 53,731.96 - 53,622.46 - 53,395.23 - 53,256.34 (18 Aug)
That is a textbook lower-high / lower-low short-term downtrend. The index is now 2.56% below its record high.
Phase: Corrective pullback inside a primary uptrend. Nine sessions of orderly, low-volume distribution off the high - not a reversal signature yet, but the burden of proof has shifted to the bulls. A reversal would need confirmation via a close back above 53,891 (the 14 August high); a genuine trend change would need a decisive loss of the EMA50 at 52,409.
INDICATORS
RSI(14): 53.83 - NEUTRAL. Cooled sharply from overbought territory in early August without ever reaching oversold. Momentum is neutral and has room to fall further before any mean-reversion bid appears. No bullish divergence is present - RSI has made lower highs alongside price, which confirms rather than contradicts the pullback. Watch the 45-50 shelf: holding it keeps the uptrend healthy, losing it opens the door to a deeper correction.
MACD: line 409.91 vs signal 453.36, histogram -43.45 - BEARISH. The bearish crossover triggered on 17 August and has now confirmed, with the histogram widening from -5.38 to -43.45 in a single session. Downside momentum is accelerating. Both lines remain well above zero, which keeps this a correction signal rather than a trend-reversal signal, but the histogram trajectory is the most clearly negative reading on the board.
Volume: 429m vs 20-day average 479m (-10%) - CONSTRUCTIVE. Two consecutive down days on below-average volume. Institutions are not dumping; this looks like buyer absence rather than seller aggression. If volume expands materially on a break of 53,256 that read changes immediately.
VIX: 15.84 (+4.28%) - NEUTRAL. Still below its own 20-day average of 16.40 and firmly in the complacent zone. Nothing in the volatility complex is pricing stress. This is a controlled pullback, not a fear event.
KEY LEVELS
Resistance
R1 - 53,478 Today's high and classic pivot R1 (53,462). First and most immediate hurdle. A reclaim here neutralises today's bar.
R2 - 53,663 Monday's open and high. Fills the 17 August gap. The most important short-term level - reclaiming it breaks the lower-high sequence.
R3 - 53,891 The 14 August high. Above here the nine-session downtrend is structurally over. Confluence with the 53,900-54,050 supply shelf.
Support
S1 - 53,256 Today's low, and immediately below it the EMA20 zone that price is already straddling. Confluence with Camarilla S4 (53,221) and pivot S1 (53,240).
S2 - 53,178 The 3 August close and the base of the early-August breakout. Losing this puts the entire August advance in question.
S3 - 53,000 Major round number sitting almost exactly on pivot S3 (53,017). Expect a defended level and likely the first real buying shelf.
Deeper: 52,759 (3 August low), then EMA50 at 52,409 - the last line of defence for the medium-term uptrend.
Classic pivots (from 18 Aug OHLC): S3 53,017.82 · S2 53,137.08 · S1 53,240.24 · P 53,359.50 · R1 53,462.66 · R2 53,581.92 · R3 53,685.08
Camarilla: Cam: S4 53,221.07 · S3 53,282.23 · S1 53,323.01 || R1 53,363.79 · R3 53,404.56 · R4 53,465.73
Round numbers: 53,000 · 53,500 · 54,000 · 54,500
NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
Strongest - above all three EMAs
JNJ 271.11 +3.33% - the day's standout, clear of EMA20 259.88 / EMA50 253.18 / EMA200 229.94. Textbook defensive bid.
KO 88.82 +2.12% - staples leadership, above 86.38 / 84.18 / 78.34.
V 364.25 +1.51% - payments holding up above 361.67 / 352.08 / 336.14.
CVX 205.74 +1.50% - the direct crude beneficiary, well clear of 193.93 / 188.83 / 179.12.
Also above all three: AMGN, VZ, JPM, DIS, MMM, MSFT, MRK, NVDA.
Weakest - below all three EMAs
HD - reported Q2 this morning; below EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200. The housing and big-ticket consumer read is poor and rising mortgage rates are the obvious culprit.
NKE 40.06 - despite +2.48% today it sits below 41.51 / 42.72 / 51.35. A bounce inside a downtrend, nothing more.
IBM 232.67 - up +1.67% but still under 234.11 / 242.43 / 256.39.
Also below all three: MCD, PG, HON.
Movers
Gainers: JNJ +3.33% · CRM +2.71% · NKE +2.48% · KO +2.12% · IBM +1.67%
Losers: CAT -4.63% · NVDA -2.34% · SHW -1.34% · BA -1.28% · CSCO -1.14% · GS -1.03%
The rotation is the real story. Healthcare, staples and telecom led; industrials, semis and housing-linked names were sold. CAT's -4.63% drop dragged roughly 90 points off the index on its own given its high share price - without CAT the Dow would have closed higher. NVDA remains above all three EMAs despite the -2.34% hit, so the AI complex is under pressure but not broken. Defensive leadership plus cyclical weakness is a classic late-stage risk-off tilt and warrants respect.
TRADE SETUPS
SWING SHORT - breakdown continuation
Trigger on a daily close below today's low, confirming the lower-low sequence into the 53,000 shelf.
Entry: 53,230 · Stop: 53,480 · T1: 52,980 · T2: 52,730 · R:R: 1:1.0 to T1, 1:2.0 to T2
Stop is 250 points, half the 14-day ATR, sat just above today's high.
Kill condition: any 4-hour close back above 53,480, or a break lower on volume below the 20-day average (no participation, no follow-through).
SWING LONG - EMA20 defence and reclaim
Only valid if 53,256 holds and price reclaims today's high. This plays the primary uptrend, not the corrective one.
Entry: 53,490 · Stop: 53,230 · T1: 53,890 · T2: 54,050 · R:R: 1:1.5 to T1, 1:2.2 to T2
Kill condition: daily close below 53,256, or FOMC minutes read hawkish and the 30-year pushes above 5.40%.
INTRADAY SHORT - Camarilla upper fade
Standard range-day fade while price stays capped by the pivot cluster.
Entry: 53,430 · Stop: 53,510 · T1: 53,323 · T2: 53,282 · R:R: 1:1.3 to T1, 1:1.85 to T2
Kill condition: 15-minute close above Cam R4 (53,465.73) - that flips the day to a trend-up profile and the fade is invalid.
INTRADAY LONG - Cam S4 bounce
Buys the confluence of Cam S4 (53,221), pivot S1 (53,240) and today's low.
Entry: 53,240 · Stop: 53,160 · T1: 53,360 · T2: 53,463 · R:R: 1:1.5 to T1, 1:2.8 to T2
Kill condition: 30-minute close below 53,150, or the level gives way in the first 30 minutes of the cash session on heavy volume.
Risk note: FOMC minutes land at 19:00 UK on Wednesday. Size intraday positions down into that window or stand aside. All setups assume 1% account risk maximum.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Wednesday 19 August
19:00 UK - FOMC minutes from the 28-29 July meeting. The dominant event of the week. With the 30-year at a 2007 high, any hawkish language on the pace of cuts is the single biggest risk to the 53,256 support.
Pre-market - Target (TGT) and Lowe's (LOW) earnings, plus TJX. Follows Home Depot today. Together these are the cleanest read on the US consumer available this month, and July retail sales already disappointed.
15:30 UK - weekly EIA crude inventories. Relevant with Brent at $91 and Iran headlines live.
Thursday 20 August
13:30 UK - weekly jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing survey.
15:00 UK - existing home sales. Directly relevant to the HD and housing-complex weakness.
Beyond 48 hours
26 August - Nvidia Q2 earnings. The AI bellwether, and today's semiconductor selloff shows positioning is already nervous.
27-29 August - Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first keynote as Chair on the morning of Friday 28 August, on "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy". A first-keynote unknown into an already jumpy rates market.
Geopolitics - escalating US pressure on Iran is keeping a risk premium in crude. Sustained Brent above $95 would start to feed a stagflationary narrative that hurts both the bond and equity legs simultaneously.
SUMMARY
The Dow is nine sessions into an orderly, low-volume pullback from its record high. Price still sits above all three key EMAs so the trend classification remains BULLISH, but the 74-point cushion over the EMA20 is wafer-thin, the MACD crossover has confirmed, and the lower-high sequence is unbroken.
53,256 is the level that matters. Hold it and this stays a routine 2.5% dip inside a strong uptrend with the EMA20 as the launchpad. Lose it on expanding volume and 53,000 comes quickly, with 52,759 and the EMA50 at 52,409 behind it.
The rates picture is the swing factor. A 30-year at 5.32% is doing real damage to equity valuations and to the rate-sensitive Dow components. Wednesday's FOMC minutes will settle the direction of the next 200 points.

MONDAY 17 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 17 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,459.78 | Change: -272.63 (-0.51%) | Range: 53,395.23 - 53,663.11
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow closed at 53,459.78, down 272.63 points (-0.51%) in a narrow 267.88-point session. Price opened at 53,663.11 - which was also the session high - and never traded above the open, closing 22% off the high of the day. That is a textbook trend-day-down profile in miniature: sellers controlled the tape from the first print to the last.
The driver was macro, not micro. Brent crude pushed to $90.86 (+2.64%) and WTI to $84.78 (+2.89%) after the US-Iran memorandum of understanding lapsed and President Trump indicated he does not expect the conflict to end soon. That fed straight into the long end of the curve: the 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.31%, its highest since 2007, with the 10-year at 4.72%. Gold jumped 2.13% to $4,473.50 - a fresh one-month high - confirming a genuine risk-premium bid rather than simple profit-taking.
Breadth of the damage was even across indices: S&P 500 -0.52% at 7,745.06, Nasdaq Composite -0.32% at 26,644.91, Russell 2000 -0.35% at 3,057.54. The VIX rose 6.60% to 15.19 - up, but off a very low base and still deep in complacency territory. Volatility is not pricing panic.
Overall bias: BULLISH on the primary trend, BEARISH on the short-term swing. The index remains 2.35% below its 5 August all-time high of 54,744.33, in a controlled pullback rather than a breakdown.
TREND
EMA stack: Close 53,459.78 > EMA20 53,260.61 > EMA50 52,370.73 > EMA200 49,586.91.
Classification: Bull (above all). The stack is in perfect bullish alignment - 20 over 50 over 200, all three rising. Price sits only 199 points (0.37%) above the 20 EMA, so that cushion is now thin; the 50 EMA is 1,089 points below and the 200 EMA a distant 3,873 points below.
Market structure: Two timeframes are pulling in opposite directions, and this is the key read of the session.
On the daily swing chart the index has printed higher highs and higher lows since the 21 May low at 49,697.47, culminating in the 5 August record high of 54,744.33 - an advance of 10.2% in eleven weeks. That primary structure is intact and unbroken.
Since 5 August, however, the short-term structure has flipped. Successive session highs read 54,744 - 54,503 - 54,095 - 54,073 - 54,223 - 53,969 - 54,049 - 53,891 - 53,663: eight consecutive lower highs. Today's low of 53,395.23 was also the lowest low since 3 August, completing a lower-low sequence. Short term the market is LH/LL; medium term it is still HH/HL.
Phase: CONSOLIDATION / PULLBACK inside an established uptrend. Nine sessions of orderly distribution off the high with no impulsive down-day - the largest single-day loss in the sequence is today's 0.51%. This is a market resetting momentum, not one changing character. The character only changes on a daily close below the 20 EMA.
INDICATORS
RSI(14): 55.46 - falling, down from 68.23 on 5 August. Nine straight lower readings. RSI is now in the neutral 45-60 band, mid-range, with room to fall before oversold. Critically, the 50 line has not been tested since 22 July; a hold above 50 keeps the bull case clean.
Divergence check: NONE. Price made a lower high on 13 August (53,839.99 close) versus 5 August (54,349.12 close), and RSI made a correspondingly lower high (60.97 vs 68.23). Momentum is confirming the price pullback rather than diverging from it. No hidden bullish or regular bearish divergence is present on the daily.
MACD(12,26,9): MACD line 458.85, signal line 464.23, histogram -5.38.
This is the session's most significant technical event: the MACD line has crossed below its signal line for the first time since 3 August, and the histogram has turned negative after nine sessions positive. The histogram peaked at +176.36 on 6 August and has decayed every session since - a clean, linear loss of momentum. Note that both lines remain well above zero, so this is a momentum-deceleration signal within an uptrend, not a trend-reversal signal. A zero-line cross would be the escalation to watch, and it is a long way off.
Volume: 436.19m versus the 20-day average of 477.58m - 8.7% below average. This matters. The entire nine-session pullback has come on declining, below-average volume, while the July-August advance was built on 500-700m sessions. Sellers are not committing size. Low-volume pullbacks into rising moving averages are the healthiest kind.
ATR(14): 521.90 (0.98% of price) - down from 662 on 5 August. Realised volatility is compressing alongside the price consolidation.
KEY LEVELS
RESISTANCE
R1 - 53,663 · Today's open and session high, one tick apart. The first and most immediate hurdle; reclaiming it invalidates today's trend-down profile.
R2 - 53,891 to 53,969 · Supply shelf built from last Wednesday's and Thursday's highs. Four of the last five sessions failed inside this band. This is the pullback's ceiling and the level that defines whether the correction is over.
R3 - 54,349 to 54,744 · The record close (5 Aug) and the all-time high (5 Aug). Major structural resistance and the only untested air above.
SUPPORT
S1 - 53,386 to 53,395 · Today's low with Camarilla S3 sitting almost exactly on it. Immediate line in the sand for the next session.
S2 - 53,260 · The rising 20 EMA. Has not been closed below since 23 July - a 17-session run. The single most important level on this chart.
S3 - 52,485 to 52,759 · The 3 August breakaway gap zone (31 Jul close 52,485.03 to 3 Aug open 52,759.06), with the 50 EMA at 52,370.73 immediately beneath. A full gap-fill would be a 1.8% further decline and would still leave the primary uptrend intact.
Classic pivots (from today's session):
S2 53,238.16 · S1 53,348.97 · P 53,506.04 · R1 53,616.85 · R2 53,773.92
Camarilla: Cam: S4 53,312.45 · S3 53,386.11 · S1 53,435.23 || R1 53,484.34 · R3 53,533.45 · R4 53,607.11
Round numbers: 53,500 (immediately overhead, closed 40 points below it) · 53,000 (psychological floor, 460 below) · 54,000 (the level the index must reclaim to re-enter the July-August range) · 54,500.
NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
STRONGEST - above all three EMAs and green today
CAT $881.65 (+2.93%) · Bull (above all). The single largest positive contributor to the index today at +$25.10 of price - on its own worth roughly 154 index points. Broke back above its 50 EMA at 881.00 on the close.
CVX $202.70 (+1.35%) · Bull (above all). The clean oil-price beneficiary; sits 7.3% above its 50 EMA and is the cleanest trend in the index.
GS $1,051.31 (+1.14%) · Bull (above all). Financials held up well despite the long-end yield spike; +$11.85, the second-largest point contributor.
AMGN $419.38 (+1.00%) · Bull (above all). Defensive healthcare bid, 5.3% above its 20 EMA.
JNJ $262.37 (+0.78%) · Bull (above all). Confirms the defensive rotation - healthcare and energy were the only groups with genuine demand.
WEAKEST - below their EMAs and red today
NKE $39.09 (-4.03%) · Bear (below all). The worst percentage performer, below all three EMAs with the 200 EMA at 51.97 - 33% overhead. Structurally broken.
DIS $103.50 (-3.14%) · Bull (above 20/50) - above the 20 EMA (101.37) and 50 EMA (100.29) but below the 200 EMA (104.00). Today's drop puts it right back on the 200 EMA.
MCD $265.53 (-2.68%) · Bear (below all). 200 EMA at 291.96, 9.9% above spot. A persistent drag all quarter.
IBM $228.85 (-2.33%) · Bear (below all). 200 EMA at 255.87. One of the weakest structural charts in the index.
HON $229.45 (-1.93%) · Bear (below all). Only marginally below its 200 EMA at 230.10, but the 20 and 50 are both above price - deteriorating.
NOTABLE NEWS
MSFT $480.35 (-3.04%) was the largest single points drag on the Dow at -$15.06 - roughly 93 index points, or about a third of the entire daily decline. The move followed a disputed third-party chip-count estimate which Microsoft publicly rejected, saying the underlying assumptions are wrong and that it does not disclose chip volumes. Concerns over AI capital-spending intensity and its effect on margins and free cash flow compounded the selling. Technically, however, MSFT remains Bull (above all) - 480.35 against a 20 EMA of 463.77, 50 EMA of 433.24 and 200 EMA of 435.31. This is a sentiment shock landing on an intact trend, not a structural break, and JPMorgan has publicly characterised the reaction as an overshoot.
Other notable red: SHW -2.54%, CRM -2.67%, BA -2.47%, AXP -1.83%, TRV -1.58%, UNH -1.52%. Consumer-facing and financial-services names bore the brunt as the yield and oil moves worked through.
Earnings on deck within the index: Home Depot reports Tuesday 18 August before the open (consensus roughly $4.71-$4.73 EPS on approximately $47bn revenue, versus $4.68 a year ago). Walmart reports Thursday 20 August. Both are Dow members and both carry index-level risk this week. HD closed at 337.88 today, Bear (below all) with its 200 EMA at 348.35 - it goes into the print structurally weak. WMT at 114.33 is Mixed: above its 20 EMA (113.32) but below both the 50 (114.96) and 200 (116.26).
TRADE SETUPS
SWING LONG - 20 EMA defence
The primary trend is up, the pullback is on falling volume, and the 20 EMA has not been closed below in 17 sessions. This is the setup that pays if the pullback is what it appears to be.
Trigger: a bullish reversal candle or an intraday reclaim of 53,500 from the 53,240-53,400 zone.
Entry: 53,330 · Stop: 53,020 · T1: 53,690 · T2: 54,060 · R:R: 1:1.16 to T1, 1:2.35 to T2
Stop sits 241 points (0.46 ATR) below the 20 EMA, outside routine noise.
Kill condition: any daily close below 53,020. That closes the market beneath its 20 EMA and turns the whole structure over to the 50 EMA at 52,371.
SWING SHORT - lower-low continuation
The counter-case. Eight lower highs and a fresh lower low is a real sequence, and if the 20 EMA gives way the gap zone at 52,485-52,759 is unusually clean air.
Trigger: a daily close below 53,395 (today's low), not merely an intraday poke.
Entry: 53,330 · Stop: 53,700 · T1: 52,960 · T2: 52,500 · R:R: 1:1.00 to T1, 1:2.24 to T2
Stop is 370 points (0.71 ATR) and sits above today's open/high at 53,663.
Kill condition: any close back above 53,700. Note these two swing setups are mutually exclusive - the daily close below 53,395 is the switch between them. Do not carry both.
INTRADAY LONG - Camarilla S3 reversal
Camarilla S3 at 53,386.11 sits within 9 points of today's low. That is a high-quality mean-reversion location for the first hour.
Entry: 53,380 · Stop: 53,255 · T1: 53,506 · T2: 53,617 · R:R: 1:1.01 to T1, 1:1.90 to T2
T1 is the classic pivot P, T2 is R1.
Kill condition: a 5-minute close below 53,240 - that is beneath both Cam S4 and the 20 EMA and voids the reversal thesis instantly.
INTRADAY SHORT - fade the pivot retest
Today's open at 53,663.11 was never revisited. If price rallies back into it without a volume expansion, sellers are likely still parked there.
Entry: 53,600 · Stop: 53,730 · T1: 53,430 · T2: 53,300 · R:R: 1:1.31 to T1, 1:2.31 to T2
Entry zone is classic R1 (53,616.85) and Cam R4 (53,607.11) confluence.
Kill condition: a 15-minute close above 53,700, which would signal the open-gap supply has been absorbed.
Risk note: Home Depot reports before Tuesday's open. Anyone holding an overnight index position into that print is taking single-stock event risk on a Dow component - size accordingly, or wait for the reaction.
UPCOMING EVENTS

08:30 ET - Housing Starts and Building Permits (July)
09:15 ET - Industrial Production and Capacity Utilisation (July)

Before the open - Home Depot (HD) Q2 earnings - Dow component, call at 09:00 ET
Wednesday 19 August
14:00 ET - FOMC Minutes from the July meeting. The highest-impact scheduled item of the week. With the 30-year at a 2007 high, any hawkish tone on the balance sheet or the inflation path lands on an already stressed long end.
Before the open - Target (TGT) and Lowe's (LOW) earnings - not Dow members, but direct read-throughs to HD and WMT
Thursday 20 August
Before the open - Walmart (WMT) Q2 earnings - Dow component. The cleanest available read on the US consumer, tariffs and pricing power.
Beyond 48 hours
27-29 August - Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, theme "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy". Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers the keynote on Friday 28 August - his first at the symposium as Chair, which raises the event's volatility premium materially.
Geopolitics
The expiry of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding is the live wire. Brent at $90.86 with a 2.64% daily gain and a one-month high of $100.69 still on the tape means the energy channel is the dominant transmission mechanism into equities right now. Watch crude first, the 30-year second, the index third - that has been the causal order for three sessions.
SUMMARY
A BEARISH session inside a BULLISH structure. The EMA stack is perfectly aligned, the pullback is nine sessions old, orderly, and running on below-average volume - all constructive. Against that, the MACD has crossed bearish for the first time in a fortnight, RSI is nine sessions lower, and the sequence of lower highs and lower lows is now unambiguous.
Everything reduces to one level: the 20 EMA at 53,260. Hold it on a closing basis and this is a routine reset that resolves higher toward 54,000 and eventually the 54,744 high. Close beneath it and the 3 August gap at 52,485-52,759 becomes the obvious magnet, with the 50 EMA at 52,371 as the backstop.
With the FOMC minutes Wednesday, two Dow-component retail prints, and an unresolved Iran situation feeding a $90 Brent price, this is a week to trade the levels and respect the stops rather than to hold conviction through the noise.
Report: 17 August 2026 21:00 GMT · Not financial advice. Always DYOR. Capital at risk.

FRIDAY 14 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 14 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,732.41 | Change: -107.58 (-0.20%) | Range: 53,673.47 - 53,890.84
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow closed at 53,732.41, down 107.58 points (-0.20%), in a tight 217-point range - the narrowest daily range of the past two weeks and roughly 0.4x the 14-day ATR of 536.
Two soft data points did the damage. July retail sales fell -0.6%, and the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment index dropped to 51.0 in August from 55.2 in July, well short of the 54.5 consensus. The index opened firm at 53,842.80, printed the high at 53,890.84, then bled lower through the afternoon session as the sentiment print was digested, settling near the lower third of the range.
Context matters: this is a drift, not a reversal. The Dow sits 11.5% above its 200-day EMA and just 1.85% below the 5 August record high of 54,744.33. The S&P 500 closed its third consecutive weekly gain despite easing off a record.
Overall bias: BULLISH on the primary trend, NEUTRAL to mildly negative on the short-term swing. Consolidation inside an intact uptrend.
TREND
EMA stack (close vs each EMA):
Close 53,732.41 · EMA20 53,239.65 · EMA50 52,326.33 · EMA200 49,723.81
Price is above all three EMAs and the EMAs are stacked 20 > 50 > 200 in perfect bullish alignment. Classification: BULLISH (above all). The 200-day SMA at 49,411.80 sits 4,320 points below spot - the longer-term structure is not remotely threatened by this week's chop.
Market structure: Higher highs and higher lows remain firmly in place on the daily and weekly. Over the last seven sessions, however, the micro-structure has turned to lower highs: 54,744 (5 Aug) then 54,502, 54,094, 54,222, 53,969, 54,049, 53,890. Lows have been comparatively flat at 53,807 / 53,850 / 53,746 / 53,731 / 53,622 / 53,673 - a mild descending-triangle look with support building around 53,620-53,680.
Phase: CONSOLIDATION after an impulsive breakout. The 3-5 August thrust ran from 52,485 to 54,744 - a 2,259-point move in three sessions. What has followed is textbook digestion: seven sessions of sideways drift that has given back only 1,012 points, or 45% of that thrust, and none of it below the EMA20. Healthy, so far.
INDICATORS
RSI(14): 59.39 - bullish territory but cooling. Trajectory over the last six sessions: 63.7, 63.0, 60.6, 60.3, 61.0, 59.4. RSI has slipped from the mid-60s without price giving up meaningful ground, which is textbook consolidation rather than distribution. No overbought reading, plenty of headroom for a fresh leg. Note a mild bearish divergence between the 5 August price high and the lower RSI readings since - worth respecting, not acting on alone.
MACD(12,26,9): 502.78 / signal 465.57 / histogram +37.21 - MACD line remains above its signal, so the trend signal is still long. But the histogram has compressed hard: 176.1, 159.6, 125.7, 92.6, 67.5, 37.2 over the last six sessions. At that rate of decay a bearish crossover is likely within one to two sessions unless Monday delivers a strong up-close. Treat a MACD cross as confirmation of a deeper pullback toward the EMA20, not as an outright short signal while price holds above it.
Volume: 318.7m against a 20-day average of 475.6m - roughly 33% below average, and the lightest of the week. Selling on declining volume is a constructive tell: the drift lower has not attracted committed supply. Volume on the 11-13 August down-days ran 379m, 411m and 417m, all below the 20-day mean too.
Volatility: VIX closed at 14.25, down 2.60%, sitting below its 20-day (16.01), 50-day (16.89) and 200-day (17.85) averages. Options markets are pricing calm. That is supportive near-term, but a sub-15 VIX leaves little cushion if next week's events surprise.
KEY LEVELS
Resistance
R1 53,890 - Friday's high and immediate intraday ceiling. First test on any Monday bounce.
R2 54,049 - 54,095 - dense cluster: 13 Aug high 54,049, 10 Aug high 54,073, 7 Aug high 54,095. A close above this band breaks the seven-session lower-high sequence and is the single most important bullish trigger on the board.
R3 54,222 - 54,273 - 11 Aug high and 4 Aug high. Last obstacle before the record.
Major: 54,744 - all-time high, 5 August. 1.85% above spot.
Support
S1 53,622 - 53,673 - Friday's low plus the 13 Aug low. The floor of the current range and the line that defines the consolidation. Lose it on a closing basis and the pullback extends.
S2 53,240 - EMA20. Untouched since 3 August. First genuine trend support and the most probable target of any orderly retracement.
S3 52,759 - 53,178 - 3 Aug low and 3 Aug close, the launch pad of the August thrust. A gap-fill zone.
Major: 52,326 - EMA50. Would represent a 4.4% correction from the record and is where the medium-term trend would properly be tested.

NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
Strongest - above all three EMAs
MSFT 495.40 (-0.30%) - EMA20 462.02, EMA50 431.31, EMA200 435.11. Trading 7.2% above its 20-day. The single biggest price-weighted contributor to Dow strength.
NVDA 225.16 (-0.06%) - EMA20 213.59, EMA50 208.76, EMA200 197.65. Clean stack, holding the August gains.
MRK 135.84 (+0.21%) - EMA20 130.06, EMA50 126.18, EMA200 114.19. Pharma leadership continues.
AMGN 415.21 (-0.63%) - EMA20 396.23, EMA50 376.73, EMA200 348.72. 4.8% above the 20-day.
JPM 362.84 (-0.07%) - EMA20 354.57, EMA50 341.34, EMA200 318.11. Financials remain a pillar.
MMM 182.65 (unch) - EMA20 177.29, EMA50 168.81, EMA200 159.89. Quietly one of the strongest relative-strength names in the index.
Weakest - below all three EMAs
IBM 234.32 (-1.19%) - EMA20 234.83, EMA50 243.40, EMA200 256.17. Full bearish stack, below the 200-day. The worst structural chart in the index.
NKE 40.73 (-1.21%) - EMA20 41.93, EMA50 42.98, EMA200 52.07. Sustained downtrend, 21.8% below its 200-day.
PG 144.55 (+0.20%) - EMA20 146.22, EMA50 146.90, EMA200 148.41. Defensive staples continue to lag badly.
Below 20/50, above 200 - BEARISH (below 20/50)
AAPL 305.93 (+0.22%) - EMA20 312.86, EMA50 309.09, EMA200 283.20. Rolling over short-term but the long-term trend holds.
CSCO 111.68 (-1.58%) - EMA20 117.22, EMA50 114.81, EMA200 96.69. Post-earnings unwind continues.
CAT 856.57 (+0.23%) - EMA20 862.63, EMA50 880.97, EMA200 767.61. Industrials cooling from a strong run.
UNH 401.73 (+0.67%) - EMA20 411.21, EMA50 406.71, EMA200 361.91.
HON 233.96 (-0.01%) - EMA20 237.99, EMA50 235.84, EMA200 230.14.
MIXED
WMT 115.27 (-0.39%) - above EMA20 113.22, below EMA50 114.98 and EMA200 116.22.
MCD 272.83 (+0.21%) - above EMA20 272.08, below EMA50 274.84 and EMA200 292.24.
GS 1,039.42 (-0.31%) - below EMA20 1,043.41, above EMA50 1,035.76 and EMA200 941.91.
HD 338.86 (-0.83%) - below EMA20 343.01, above EMA50 338.56, below EMA200 348.84.
Friday movers
Gainers: DOW +2.34%, DIS +1.96%, CVX +1.16%, UNH +0.67%, BA +0.58%
Losers: CRM -2.56%, CSCO -1.58%, NKE -1.21%, IBM -1.19%, HD -0.83%
The breadth picture is the caution flag. Of the 30 components, only around half are above all three EMAs and the leadership is narrow and heavily concentrated in MSFT and NVDA - both of which are price-weighted heavyweights. Consumer-facing names (NKE, HD, MCD, WMT) sitting below key averages is consistent with Friday's weak retail sales and sentiment data. That is a real signal, not noise.
TRADE SETUPS
SWING 1 - LONG: EMA20 pullback continuation
The highest-probability setup on the board. Let the index come to trend support rather than chasing inside the range.
Entry: 53,300 (EMA20 zone 53,240-53,350, on a bullish reversal candle) · Stop: 52,900 · T1: 53,890 · T2: 54,222 · R:R: 1.48 / 2.31
Risk 400 points, well inside the 536-point ATR. Kill condition: a daily close below 52,900 invalidates - that breaks the EMA20 decisively and puts the 3 August launch pad in play.
SWING 2 - LONG: Range breakout
The trigger that ends the seven-session lower-high sequence.
Entry: 54,100 on a daily close above the 54,049-54,095 cluster · Stop: 53,620 · T1: 54,744 · T2: 55,200 · R:R: 1.34 / 2.29
Kill condition: a failed breakout that closes back below 53,890 within two sessions. Do not take this one on light volume - a breakout on sub-400m volume is not to be trusted given the current 475m average.
SWING 3 - SHORT: Range floor failure
The hedge. Only valid if 53,622 gives way.
Entry: 53,590 on a decisive break of the 53,622-53,673 floor · Stop: 53,900 · T1: 53,240 · T2: 52,760 · R:R: 1.13 / 2.68
Kill condition: any reclaim and close back above 53,700. This is a counter-trend trade in a bullish structure - size it smaller and take T1 aggressively.
INTRADAY 1 - LONG: Camarilla S1 reversion
Entry: 53,720 (Cam S1 53,712 / above Cam S4 53,613) · Stop: 53,610 · T1: 53,858 (pivot R1) · T2: 53,983 (pivot R2) · R:R: 1.25 / 2.39
Kill condition: a 15-minute close below 53,610 (Cam S4). Below that the Camarilla model flips to trend-down mode and the mean-reversion logic no longer applies.
INTRADAY 2 - SHORT: Session-high rejection
Entry: 53,870 on rejection of the 53,858-53,890 band (pivot R1 / Friday high) · Stop: 53,960 · T1: 53,766 (pivot) · T2: 53,640 (pivot S1) · R:R: 1.16 / 2.56
Kill condition: a 15-minute close above 53,960. Above that the R2/R3 band at 53,983-54,075 becomes the magnet and the short is wrong.
General risk note: with ATR at 536 and Friday's range only 217, compression is building. The next expansion move is likely to be sharp in whichever direction it resolves. Size positions on the 536-point ATR, not on Friday's quiet range.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Monday 17 August - Empire State Manufacturing Index (13:30 UK). Foreign portfolio flows (21:00 UK). A light open to the week.
Tuesday 18 August - Housing Starts and Building Permits (13:30 UK), Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization (14:15 UK), Pending Home Sales (15:00 UK). Housing data carries extra weight after Friday's consumer wobble - a second soft consumer read would compound the narrative.
Wednesday 19 August - FOMC Minutes (19:00 UK). The week's first major event risk. Markets will parse the July meeting record for how divided the committee is on the path from here. Expect volatility into and immediately after the release.
Thursday 20 August - Philadelphia Fed Index and weekly Initial Jobless Claims (13:30 UK), Leading Indicators (15:00 UK).
Friday 21 August - Jackson Hole Symposium begins, alongside flash S&P Global Manufacturing and Services PMIs, Existing Home Sales and the CB Leading Index. Historically one of the highest-volatility calendar events of the year for indices. Positioning into the Fed Chair's address typically drains liquidity mid-week and amplifies moves.
Earnings: the retail reporting block lands next week, with Dow components Home Depot and Walmart both due. After a -0.6% July retail sales print and a sentiment reading of 51.0, guidance from those two will be scrutinised hard and either could move the index by itself given their weightings.
The read-through: Monday and Tuesday are relatively clear runway for a technical resolution of the 53,622-54,095 range. From Wednesday onward the calendar takes over. If you are trading the breakout setup, the cleanest window is early in the week.

Replied by remo on topic Re: US30 (Dow Jones) Daily Technical Analysis & Setups
THURSDAY 13 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 13 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,839.99 | Change: +69.72 (+0.13%) | Range: 53,622.46-54,049.14
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow closed at 53,839.99, up +69.72 points (+0.13%), but the headline number hides a genuinely wide session. The index opened at 53,828.55, sank to 53,622.46 (the lowest print of the entire six-day pullback), then rallied 427 points off that low to tag 54,049.14 before settling almost exactly where it opened. Open-to-close body of just +11 points with 209-point upper and 206-point lower wicks: a textbook long-legged doji. Indecision, but indecision that bought the dip.
The Dow was the laggard again. S&P 500 closed at a record 7,798.99 (+0.65%), clearing 7,800 intraday for the first time; the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.81% to 26,803.03; the Russell 2000 printed a record 3,067. The Dow finished 1.65% below its 5 August all-time high of 54,744.33.
The reason is almost entirely idiosyncratic. Cisco (CSCO) collapsed 8.40% to $113.47 after guidance disappointed. With the Dow divisor at 0.16271, every $1 of component price is worth 6.15 index points, so Cisco alone stripped roughly 64 points off the Dow. Strip Cisco out and the blue chips closed up around 134 points, broadly in line with the S&P.
Macro backdrop was supportive. July PPI came in flat versus +0.2% expected, following Wednesday's July CPI at +0.1% m/m in line. WTI fell to the low $80s on IEA demand-contraction forecasts, taking a chunk out of the inflation impulse. Offsetting that, the Iran situation escalated verbally, with Tehran and Washington issuing opposing claims over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Overall bias: primary trend BULLISH · short-term NEUTRAL (consolidation inside an uptrend).
TREND
EMA stack: EMA20 53,187.78 · EMA50 52,268.89 · EMA200 49,524.85. Price 53,839.99 is above all three, and the EMAs are stacked in perfect bullish order (20 > 50 > 200). Classification: BULLISH (above all). Price sits 652 points (1.2%) above the 20 EMA and 4,315 points (8.7%) above the 200 EMA, so the trend is intact but the index is still extended from its long-term mean.
Market structure: two timeframes are saying different things.
Swing structure is firmly higher-high / higher-low: the 29 July low of 51,551 launched a 6.2% run in five sessions into the 5 August record of 54,744.33.
Short-term structure since that high is corrective: highs 54,503 - 54,095 - 54,073 - 54,223 - 53,969 - 54,049 and lows 53,835 - 53,808 - 53,850 - 53,746 - 53,732 - 53,622. That is a sequence of lower highs and lower lows, i.e. a controlled drift lower.
Critically, today's session broke to a new pullback low at 53,622 and then rejected it hard, closing 218 points above it. That is the first sign in six sessions that sellers are running out of road.
Phase: CONSOLIDATION. Six sessions of sideways-to-lower drift after a parabolic five-day advance, holding well above the 20 EMA. Textbook bull-flag digestion rather than distribution, provided 53,600 holds.
INDICATORS
RSI(14): 60.97 (previous 60.34). Rising fractionally on the day. RECOVERING and firmly in bullish territory. The important detail is that the index has now spent six sessions correcting and RSI has not once lost 60. That is what healthy consolidation looks like. No bearish divergence: the 5 August price high carried a higher RSI reading than today's lower price, so momentum and price are moving in the same direction. Not overbought, not oversold, plenty of headroom in either direction.
MACD (12,26,9): MACD line 523.79, signal line 456.27, histogram +67.52. The MACD line remains above signal, so the bullish crossover from early August is still valid. However the histogram has contracted from +92.64 to +67.52 (down 27% in one session) and has been shrinking all week. Momentum is positive but decelerating. If the histogram flips negative it will mark the first bearish MACD cross since 3 August and would argue for a deeper test of the 20 EMA at 53,188.
Volume: 415.7m against a 20-day average of 492.7m, some 15.6% below normal. Light volume through a pullback is constructive - it says holders are not dumping, they are simply not being replaced. But it also means today's 427-point range was thin, and thin ranges are prone to being reversed.
ATR(14): 560.63 points (1.04% of index). Today's 426.68-point range came in below ATR, so volatility is compressing into the flag. Compression before expansion. Size stops accordingly.
VIX: 14.63, up 0.08 on the day, having traded 14.39-14.80. Sub-15 and pinned near the low end of its recent range. Options markets see no meaningful risk premium here, which cuts both ways: cheap hedges, but complacent positioning ahead of a data print.
KEY LEVELS
Resistance
R1 54,049 - today's high and the classic R1 pivot at 54,052 sit on top of each other. First real hurdle; a close above turns the six-day lower-high sequence off.
R2 54,223 - the 11 August swing high and the last lower high before today. Reclaiming this breaks the corrective structure outright.
R3 54,744 - the all-time high from 5 August. Also the 52-week high. The magnet if the flag resolves upward.
Support
S1 53,622 - today's low, and now the most important number on the chart. Classic S1 pivot at 53,625 reinforces it. Lose this on a closing basis and the bull-flag read is invalidated.
S2 53,411 - S2 pivot, and roughly the mid-point of the 3-5 August impulse leg. First proper demand shelf below today's low.
S3 53,188 - the 20 EMA, which has not been tested since 3 August, plus the S3 pivot at 53,199. A pullback to here would be entirely normal and, on this structure, buyable.
Classic pivots (from today's session): S2 53,411 · S1 53,625 · P 53,837 · R1 54,052 · R2 54,264
Camarilla: Cam: S4 53,605 · S3 53,723 · S1 53,801 || R1 53,879 · R3 53,957 · R4 54,075
Round numbers: 54,000 acted as the pivot all session and is the line in the sand for Friday. 53,500 below and 54,500 above are the next psychological magnets. Note that today's close of 53,839.99 is within 3 points of the classic pivot at 53,837 - the market closed dead on its own fulcrum, which is about as neutral a close as it is possible to print.
NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
Strongest - above EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200
Salesforce (CRM) $201.37, +4.16% - best Dow performer, reclaimed $200 and now above all three EMAs. Cleanest technical structure in the index.
Verizon (VZ) $48.22, +2.64% - defensive bid returning, above all EMAs, quietly building a base.
Merck (MRK) $135.55, +1.98% - healthcare strength, above all EMAs, ex-dividend 15 September ($0.85).
Visa (V) $365.45, +1.68% - above all EMAs and pushing back toward the top of its range despite the wider consumer-credit wobble.
Disney (DIS) $104.80, +1.53% - above all EMAs, holding the $100 reclaim.
Weakest
Cisco (CSCO) $113.47, -8.40% - the story of the day. Below EMA20 and EMA50, still above EMA200, so classification is BEARISH (below 20/50) rather than a full breakdown. Single-handedly cost the Dow around 64 points. Gapped through support with no obvious floor until the 200 EMA region.
UnitedHealth (UNH) $399.06, -1.61% - lost the $400 handle, below EMA20 and EMA50, above EMA200. BEARISH (below 20/50).
McDonald's (MCD) $272.25, -1.25% - MIXED stack, drifting, no trend to trade.
Nike (NKE) $41.23, +1.78% - up on the day but structurally the weakest name in the index: below EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200. BEARISH (below all). A bounce in a downtrend until proven otherwise.
Procter and Gamble (PG) $144.26, +0.12% - also below all three EMAs. BEARISH (below all). The classic defensive is not acting like a safe haven.
Also worth noting: Amazon (AMZN) $265.13 fell 0.80% but remains above all EMAs; Apple (AAPL) $305.26 rose 1.00% yet sits below its 20 and 50 EMAs - BEARISH (below 20/50) despite the green candle. Nvidia (NVDA) $225.30, +0.54%, remains above all EMAs and is doing the heavy lifting on the tech side. Goldman Sachs (GS) $1,042.63 and IBM $237.14 both screen MIXED.
TRADE SETUPS
SWING LONG - buy the flag low (primary setup)
The highest-probability trade is buying the pullback into today's rejection zone rather than chasing a breakout. Structure is bullish, RSI is holding 60, and today's low was defended aggressively.
Entry: 53,660 · Stop: 53,250 · T1: 54,050 · T2: 54,500 · R:R: 1:1.0 to T1, 1:2.0 to T2
Stop sits 410 points below entry, roughly 0.73 ATR, and beneath the S2 pivot at 53,411.
Kill condition: daily close below 53,400. That takes out both today's low and the S2 shelf and turns the flag into a top.
SWING LONG - breakout continuation (secondary)
If the flag simply resolves upward without offering a retest, the trigger is a decisive break of today's high and the R1 cluster.
Entry: 54,100 on a confirmed break · Stop: 53,600 · T1: 54,500 · T2: 54,744 · R:R: 1:0.8 to T1, 1:1.3 to T2
Lower reward for the convenience of confirmation. Only worth taking on above-average volume - a breakout on sub-450m shares should be treated with suspicion given this week's thin tape.
Kill condition: failure to hold 54,000 after the break, i.e. a same-day close back below it.
SWING SHORT - flag failure (invalidation trade)
Not the base case, but the pullback has produced six consecutive lower highs and that has to be respected.
Entry: 53,550 on a daily close below 53,600 · Stop: 53,990 · T1: 53,190 · T2: 52,750 · R:R: 1:0.8 to T1, 1:1.8 to T2
T1 is the 20 EMA at 53,188 and the S3 pivot at 53,199, which is where the first bounce should come from.
Kill condition: any reclaim of 54,000. Do not hold this through a close back above the pivot.
INTRADAY LONG - Camarilla reclaim (Friday)
Entry: 53,879 (Cam R1) on a reclaim from above · Stop: 53,780 · T1: 53,957 · T2: 54,052 · R:R: 1:0.8 to T1, 1:1.7 to T2
Standard Camarilla long: hold above R1, target R3 then R4. Tight 99-point risk.
Kill condition: loss of Cam S1 at 53,801 - that flips the day to the short side of the pivot.
INTRADAY SHORT - R1 rejection (Friday)
Entry: 54,040 on rejection at the 54,049/54,052 confluence · Stop: 54,150 · T1: 53,880 · T2: 53,725 · R:R: 1:1.5 to T1, 1:2.9 to T2
Best risk-reward on the board if the level holds. Requires an actual rejection candle, not a guess in front of the level.
Kill condition: 15-minute close above 54,075 (Cam R4). At that point the breakout is real and the short is wrong.
Position sizing note: ATR is 560 points. Anyone sizing off a sub-200-point stop on an index that routinely covers 400-plus points intraday is asking to be wicked out. Size the position to the stop, not the stop to the position.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Friday 14 August - the main event of the next 48 hours
13:30 UK (08:30 ET) - US Retail Sales (July). Consensus +0.2% m/m, previous +0.2%. Core (ex-autos) consensus +0.2%, previous -0.2%.
13:30 UK - Import prices (July).
14:15 UK (09:15 ET) - Industrial Production (July). Consensus +0.2% m/m, previous +0.1%. Capacity utilisation expected 76.3% versus 76.1%.
15:00 UK (10:00 ET) - University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment, preliminary August. Consensus 68.5, previous 66.4.
15:00 UK - Business inventories (June), consensus +0.2%.
Retail sales is the one that matters. With CPI in at +0.1% and PPI flat, the disinflation leg of the soft-landing trade is already priced. What is not priced is consumer weakness. A soft retail sales print would be read as recession risk rather than rate-cut fuel, and the Dow's cyclical and consumer weighting makes it more exposed to that than the Nasdaq. A hot print does the opposite and puts the ATH back in play.
Beyond Friday
Retail earnings season begins next week and is disproportionately Dow-relevant, with Home Depot and Walmart both due. Given today's action in consumer names - MCD down 1.25%, NKE and PG both below all their EMAs - the read-through risk is real.
Honeywell trades ex-dividend Friday 14 August ($0.70). Chevron ex-dividend 19 August ($1.78), Microsoft 20 August ($0.91), Amgen and Sherwin-Williams 21 August, Walmart 21 August.
August monthly options expiry falls on Friday 21 August, which typically pins ranges into the week before.
Geopolitics remains the wildcard. The Strait of Hormuz dispute between Washington and Tehran is unresolved, the IEA is forecasting global oil demand contracting 1.6m bpd in 2026, and any re-escalation that puts a bid back under crude reverses the disinflation narrative that has driven the last two sessions.
The bottom line: the Dow is in a bull flag with an intact EMA stack, RSI defending 60, and a long-legged doji that rejected the lowest low of the correction. 53,622 is the line. Above it, the path of least resistance is back toward 54,744. Below it, 53,188 comes quickly. Retail sales at 13:30 UK on Friday decides which.

US30 DAILY TECHNICAL REPORT - WEDNESDAY 12 AUGUST 2026
Data: Close 12 Aug 2026 | US30: 53,770.27 | Change: -21.58 (-0.04%) | Range: 53,731.96-53,969.36
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Dow finished effectively unchanged at 53,770.27, down 21.58 points (-0.04%) on the session. Open 53,797.47, high 53,969.36, low 53,731.96 - a total range of just 237.4 points (0.44%), which is only 42% of the 14-day ATR of 570.9. That is the tightest daily range in several weeks and it matters more than the flat close does.
The driver was July CPI, which printed at 3.4% year-on-year, matching consensus and cooling from June's 3.5%, with the monthly figure at +0.1%. The reaction was constructive but selective: rate-sensitive and AI-linked names were bid while the Dow's defensive and retail constituents leaked. That split is why the Dow lagged badly on the day - the S&P 500 closed +0.26% at 7,748.50 and the Nasdaq Composite +0.54% at 26,588.49, both comfortably ahead of the blue-chip index.
Supporting backdrop: VIX fell 4.78% to 14.55, the US 10-year yield sits at 4.68%, and the dollar index is flat at 100.00. Volume was 406.4m against a 20-day average of 492.5m - only 83%, a below-average tape consistent with positioning ahead of Thursday's PPI rather than genuine distribution.
Overall bias: primary trend BULLISH, near-term posture NEUTRAL. The index is coiling inside a five-session consolidation directly beneath all-time highs. This is a compression pattern, not a topping pattern - but it is unresolved, and the resolution is likely to be event-driven.
TREND STRUCTURE
EMA stack (close vs each EMA, strict):
EMA20: 53,119.12 - price above
EMA50: 52,204.76 - price above
EMA200: 49,454.65 - price above
Classification: BULL (above all). The stack is also correctly ordered - 20 above 50 above 200 - with all three rising. There is no ambiguity in the trend read on the daily timeframe.
Market structure: the higher-timeframe sequence remains firmly HH/HL. The July swing low of 51,542.06 (23 Jul) held well above the June base, and the 5 August print of 54,744.33 took out the July high of 53,289.30 decisively. Nothing in the last five sessions has damaged that.
However, the short-term sequence has turned into lower highs. Session highs since the peak read 54,744 (5 Aug), 54,503, 54,095, 54,073, 54,223, 53,969 (today). Against that, session lows have held in a tight 53,732-53,850 band. Compressing highs against a flat floor is a descending-triangle geometry on the very short term, sitting inside a dominant uptrend - the two readings are not in conflict, the smaller one simply has not resolved yet.
Phase: CONSOLIDATION following the 3-5 August breakout leg, which carried the index from 52,485 to 54,349 in three sessions - roughly 1,860 points. Five sessions of sideways digestion after a move of that size is normal and healthy behaviour, not weakness. The consolidation range is 53,732 to 54,223 on a closing-extremes basis, or 53,732 to 54,744 taking the full 5 August spike.
MOMENTUM AND INDICATORS
RSI(14): 60.34 - bullish territory but cooling. The six-session sequence reads 68.2, 62.7, 63.7, 63.0, 60.6, 60.3. RSI peaked at 71.4 on 6 July and made a lower high at 68.2 on 5 August while price made a substantially higher high (53,056 then 54,349). That is a bearish momentum divergence on the daily and it deserves respect - it does not mean sell, it means the second leg was driven by fewer participants than the first. Note also that 60 has acted as the floor for RSI throughout this advance; a decisive break below 50 would be the first genuine trend-damage signal.
MACD: line 532.02, signal 439.39, histogram +92.64. Still a positive configuration with the MACD line above signal - no bearish cross yet. But the histogram has contracted for six consecutive sessions: 173.2, 176.4, 176.1, 159.6, 125.7, 92.6. At the current rate of decay a bearish crossover arrives within two to three sessions unless price expands upward. This is the clearest warning in the dataset - momentum is draining even though price is not.
Volume: 406.4m versus the 20-day average of 492.5m, or 83%. Critically, the drift lower over the last four sessions has come on declining volume, which is the signature of drift rather than supply. Confirmation would require a down day on above-average volume - that has not happened.
Volatility: ATR(14) at 570.9 against a realised range today of 237.4. Volatility compression of that magnitude reliably precedes expansion. VIX at 14.55 and falling adds a complacency element - the market is not priced for a surprise on Thursday.
Net momentum read: MIXED, with the weight of evidence shifting from bullish to neutral. Trend intact, momentum decaying, volume unconvincing on both sides.
KEY LEVELS
RESISTANCE
R1 - 53,969 - today's high. First hurdle, and the level that capped four separate intraday attempts. Immediate significance only.
R2 - 54,223 - 11 August high and the five-session ceiling. This is the level that defines the consolidation. A daily close above it resolves the descending-highs pattern to the upside and reopens the record.
R3 - 54,744 - 5 August intraday high and the all-time high. The structural objective. Expect supply on the first touch.
Secondary: 54,503 (6 Aug high) and the 54,000 round number sitting just above R1.
SUPPORT
S1 - 53,732 - today's low, and effectively the five-session floor given 11 August bottomed at 53,746. The single most important short-term level on the chart. It has been defended four times.
S2 - 53,178 - the 3 August breakout close and the origin of the entire August leg, with the rising EMA20 at 53,119 immediately beneath. That confluence makes the 53,119-53,230 band the primary bull defence zone. A pullback into it would be a normal retest, not a failure.
S3 - 52,485 - 31 July close and the top of the old July range, with the EMA50 at 52,205 below. Losing this would end the August advance outright.
Secondary: the 53,500 round number between S1 and S2.
Classic pivots (from 12 Aug session):
S2 53,586 · S1 53,678 · P 53,824 · R1 53,916 · R2 54,061
Camarilla:
Cam: S4 53,640 · S3 53,705 · S1 53,749 || R1 53,792 · R3 53,836 · R4 53,901
Round numbers in play: 54,000 (immediately overhead, unbroken since 7 Aug), 53,500 (untested since 3 Aug), 54,500, 53,000.
Note how compressed the Camarilla set is - S4 to R4 spans only 261 points. That is a direct consequence of today's narrow range and it means the intraday levels will be swept quickly once volatility returns.
NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS
STRONGEST - trading above all three EMAs
NVDA 224.09 (+3.03%) - the day's best performer and the single biggest positive contributor. Above EMA20 211.01, EMA50 207.39, EMA200 197.18. Clean leadership.
CSCO 123.88 (+2.86%) - ran hard into its Q4 FY26 print. Above EMA20 118.26, EMA50 114.99, EMA200 96.72.
MRK 132.92 (+1.92%) - above EMA20 128.82, EMA50 125.39, EMA200 113.63. Quiet, persistent healthcare strength.
AXP 344.08 (+0.96%) and JPM 365.18 (+0.87%) - both above all three EMAs. Financials continue to act well with the 10-year steady at 4.68%.
Also above all three but red today: MSFT 492.43 (-2.26%) and AMZN 267.28 (-1.83%) - profit-taking within intact uptrends.
WEAKEST - trading below EMAs
NKE 40.51 (-1.96%) - Bear (below all). EMA20 42.14, EMA50 43.15, EMA200 52.31. The index's most damaged chart by a wide margin.
PG 144.08 (-0.78%) - Bear (below all). EMA20 146.62, EMA50 147.11, EMA200 148.58, all stacked above price. Defensive staples offering no bid whatsoever.
AAPL 302.25 (-0.87%) - Bear (below 20/50). Below EMA20 314.47 and EMA50 309.38, still well above EMA200 282.89.
CAT 855.60 (+1.45%) and HON 235.34 (+2.27%) - both Bear (below 20/50) despite strong sessions. Industrials bouncing from below, not leading from above.
UNH 405.59 (+0.85%) - Bear (below 20/50).
HD 343.43 (-3.12%) - Mixed (below EMA200 at 349.65, above EMA50 at 338.42, marginally below EMA20 at 343.63). The worst performer on the day, de-risking ahead of Q2 earnings on 18 August where consensus sits at $4.71 diluted EPS versus $4.68 a year ago.
Earnings and news: Cisco reported Q4 FY26 after the close - revenue $17.3bn, a record quarter, with total product orders up 35% year-on-year (+25% excluding hyperscalers), networking +28%, security +14%, collaboration +12%, and $4bn of AI infrastructure orders in the quarter alone. CSCO had already advanced 57% year-to-date into the print. This is a meaningful overnight variable for the Dow given the stock's gain today was partly anticipatory.
Breadth note: 15 of the 30 components closed higher - a dead-even split that explains the flat index close precisely. Nine constituents sit below both their EMA20 and EMA50. Internal breadth is adequate but not robust - the index is being carried by a narrow technology and financials cohort while retail, staples and parts of industrials lag. That is the same narrowness the RSI divergence is describing.
TRADE SETUPS - THURSDAY 13 AUGUST
SWING LONG - Consolidation breakout (primary)
Trades with the dominant trend. Requires the five-session ceiling to give way.
Entry: 54,230 buy stop · Stop: 53,830 · T1: 54,744 · T2: 55,250 · R:R: 1:1.3 then 1:3.6
Stop sits below the daily pivot at 53,824, which is 400 points or 0.70 ATR - deliberately tighter than a full ATR because a genuine breakout should not revisit the pivot. Scale at T1, the all-time high, where supply is likely.
Kill condition: invalid if the break occurs on volume below the 20-day average of 492.5m, or if price closes back inside 54,223 the same session. A hollow breakout here is a trap given the momentum divergence.
SWING SHORT - Floor failure (counter-trend, secondary)
Only valid on a confirmed daily close below the defended floor. Counter-trend by definition - size accordingly.
Entry: 53,690 on a daily close below 53,732 · Stop: 54,080 · T1: 53,230 · T2: 52,900 · R:R: 1:1.2 then 1:2.0
T1 is the 3 August breakout base; the rising EMA20 at 53,119 sits just beneath and should be treated as the hard floor for this idea. Do not carry the position into that zone expecting a break.
Kill condition: invalid on any intraday-only break that closes back above 53,732. Four defences of this level mean wick-based entries will be punished. Requires a close, and preferably expanding volume.
INTRADAY LONG - Camarilla S3/S4 reversion
Entry: 53,720 · Stop: 53,620 · T1: 53,824 · T2: 53,916 · R:R: 1:1.0 then 1:2.0
Buys the Cam S3 53,705 / S4 53,640 shelf against the five-session floor, targeting the daily pivot then R1. Standard mean-reversion within a range.
Kill condition: stand aside entirely if PPI at 13:30 UK prints hot - a topside inflation surprise turns this shelf from support into a shelf that breaks. Do not hold through the release.
INTRADAY SHORT - Range-high fade
Entry: 53,965 · Stop: 54,065 · T1: 53,824 · T2: 53,732 · R:R: 1:1.4 then 1:2.3
Fades today's high at 53,969, which sits in confluence with Cam R4 53,901 and pivot R1 53,916. The cleanest risk-reward on the board while the range holds.
Kill condition: abandon on any 15-minute close above 54,065, and do not take this setup at all if the market gaps above 54,000 on the PPI release - a gap through the level changes the structure.
Position sizing note: with ATR at 570.9 against a 237.4-point realised range, volatility expansion is overdue. Intraday stops of 100 points are appropriate to today's compressed tape but will be far too tight once range expands. Reassess stop distance after the 13:30 UK release rather than before it.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Thursday 13 August - 13:30 UK (08:30 ET)
PPI - forecast +0.2% month-on-month, previous -0.3%. The dominant catalyst for the next session. A rebound from a negative prior into positive territory is already expected; the risk is a print materially above 0.2%, which would undercut the disinflation narrative that CPI just supported and put pressure on the Fed-hold consensus.
Initial Jobless Claims - forecast 202K, previous 199K. Released simultaneously. Still historically low; a print above 215K would shift the conversation from inflation to labour-market softening.
Friday 14 August
Retail Sales - the consumer read that closes the week. Particularly relevant to the Dow given the weakness in HD, NKE and the retail complex.
Overnight and corporate
Cisco Q4 FY26 - reported after Wednesday's close. Record revenue of $17.3bn, product orders +35%, $4bn AI infrastructure orders. Thursday's CSCO reaction is a live input to the Dow's open.
Home Depot Q2 - Tuesday 18 August, before the open. Consensus $4.71 diluted EPS.
Policy backdrop
Following today's CPI, rate-futures positioning tilted toward the Fed holding, having been close to a 50-50 split the previous session. PPI is the last major input before that view hardens. Watch for Fed speakers through Thursday and Friday - with the market this thinly positioned and VIX at 14.55, commentary carries more weight than usual.
SUMMARY
The Dow is BULLISH on trend and NEUTRAL on the near term. Every EMA is beneath price and correctly stacked, the HH/HL structure is unbroken, and the August breakout leg has not been retraced. Against that, the RSI divergence, six consecutive sessions of MACD histogram contraction, below-average volume and a series of lower highs all say the advance has lost thrust while price holds up.
The practical read is simple: the index has compressed into a 237-point range directly under record highs with volatility at a fraction of its own ATR and VIX at 14.55. That configuration resolves, and it usually resolves violently. 53,732 below and 54,223 above are the only two numbers that matter. Trade the resolution, not the range - and let PPI at 13:30 UK on Thursday do the choosing.

Camarilla:
Cam: S4 53,640 · S3 53,705 · S1 53,749 || R1 53,792 · R3 53,836 · R4 53,901
