Data: Close 24 Sep 2026 | US30: 51,355 | Change: -162 (-0.31%) | Range: 51,129-51,491

Market Overview
The Dow slipped for a third straight session, closing at 51,355 (-162 pts / -0.31%) after printing a fresh one-month low at 51,129 early in the session. The open was weak (around -217 pts) as the bond rout extended: the 10Y Treasury pushed through 5.19% (highest since 2007) and the 30Y hit 5.48% (highest since 2004), with Wednesday's hot S&P Global PMI lifting October Fed-hike odds towards ~70%. Crude added to the pressure (Brent ~$107, WTI ~$95).
The index clawed back ~225 pts off the low after Reuters reported US and Iranian negotiators are working on a phased deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and dip-buyers pulled the S&P 500 back to flat and the Nasdaq into the green. The Dow lagged thanks to rate-sensitive and cyclical names. VIX firmed to ~15.2 (+0.97).
Overall bias: BEARISH short term (correction inside a longer-term uptrend) - RECOVERING only on a daily close back above 51,900.

Trend
EMA stack (daily): EMA20 52,272 · EMA50 52,449 · EMA200 50,415
Close 51,355 is below the 20 and 50 but above the 200 = Bear (below 20/50). EMA20 has crossed under EMA50 - the short-term stack is now bearish, while the 200 is still rising well beneath.
Structure: LH/LL - ATH close 54,354 (5 Aug), lower high 53,752 (3 Sep), lower lows at 51,192 (16 Sep) and now 51,129 (today). The index is 5.5% off its record.
Phase: Corrective pullback within a primary uptrend. Price is now roughly midway between the broken 20/50 cluster (~52,300-52,450) and the 200 EMA (~50,400).

Indicators
RSI(14): 36.9 - BEARISH momentum but not oversold. Note a tentative bullish divergence: price made a lower low (51,129 vs 51,192 on 16 Sep) while RSI made a higher low (36.9 vs 35.0). Needs a close above 51,900 to confirm.
MACD (12,26,9): -416 vs signal -302 - line below signal and both below zero. Histogram -114.5, roughly flat over the last three sessions (-112 / -112 / -115) after narrowing from -185 - downside momentum is persistent but no longer accelerating.
Volume: Index volume not reported on the cash DJI feed. Breadth was mixed - S&P flat, Nasdaq green, Russell 2000 -0.1% - so the Dow's underperformance was sector-specific (industrials, financials, home improvement) rather than broad liquidation.
ATR(14): ~455 pts - used for stops below.

Key Levels
Resistance
R1 51,500-51,520 - prior close 51,517, today's high 51,491 and classic R1 51,521. First lid.
R2 51,850-51,940 - 22-23 Sep highs / 17 Sep high. Reclaiming this breaks the LH/LL sequence.
R3 52,270-52,450 - EMA20 / EMA50 cluster. Major supply zone.
Support
S1 51,130-51,160 - today's low 51,129 / classic S1 51,159 / Cam S4 51,156.
S2 50,960-51,000 - classic S2 50,963 and the 51,000 round number.
S3 50,400-50,450 - rising EMA200 (50,415). Deeper backstop: 49,914 (10 Jun low) and 50,000.
Classic pivots: S2 50,963 · S1 51,159 · P 51,325 · R1 51,521 · R2 51,687
Cam: S4 51,156 · S3 51,256 · S1 51,322 || R1 51,388 · R3 51,455 · R4 51,554
Round numbers: 50,000 · 50,500 · 51,000 · 51,500 · 52,000

Notable Dow Components
Relative strength (session):
Salesforce (CRM) +1.8% to +2.3% - led the index all day.
Walt Disney (DIS) +1.9% early - comm services was the top S&P sector (+1.1%).
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) up to +1.8% - defensive healthcare bid.
Visa (V) +1.0% - payments held up despite financials' weakness.
Relative weakness (session):
Home Depot (HD) around -2.8% - 30Y mortgage rate back above 7% hits housing names.
Caterpillar (CAT) -1.8% - heaviest points drag given its ~$800 share price.
Boeing (BA) -1.6% and Goldman Sachs (GS) -1.5% - cyclicals and high-priced financials weighed.
Walmart (WMT) -1.6%, Nvidia (NVDA) -1.4%, Microsoft (MSFT) -1.0% - AI names soft after Oracle's force majeure notice on its New Mexico data centre (ORCL -5%, not a Dow member).
News flow: Trump-Xi summit in Washington (trade truce extended to January); no US-China AI guardrails expected. Mover figures are intraday reads - EMA status per component not updated this run.

Trade Setups
Swing 1 - Sell the rally into broken support (primary)
Entry: 51,880 (sell limit) · Stop: 52,330 (~1 ATR, above EMA20) · T1: 51,130 · T2: 50,450 · R:R: 1.7 / 3.2
Kill: Daily close above 52,300 (EMA20 reclaimed) or a confirmed Hormuz deal that sends yields sharply lower - stand aside.

Swing 2 - Buy the EMA200 test (counter-trend)
Entry: 50,450 (buy limit) · Stop: 49,880 (below 10 Jun low 49,914) · T1: 51,350 · T2: 51,900 · R:R: 1.6 / 2.5
Kill: Daily close below 49,900, or the 10Y breaks above 5.30% before entry - the trend-follower's case strengthens and the 200 is unlikely to hold.

Intraday 1 - Breakdown short below today's low
Entry: 51,110 (15m close below 51,129) · Stop: 51,340 (back above pivot) · T1: 50,900 · T2: 50,680 · R:R: 0.9 / 1.9
Kill: Price recovers above 51,256 (Cam S3) within 30 minutes of the trigger - failed breakdown, flatten.

Intraday 2 - Camarilla R4 breakout long
Entry: 51,570 (15m close above Cam R4 51,554) · Stop: 51,340 · T1: 51,850 · T2: 52,000 · R:R: 1.2 / 1.9
Kill: Falls back below 51,455 (Cam R3), or hot durable goods / UMich inflation expectations push the 10Y higher.

Upcoming Events (next 48h)
Fri 25 Sep (ET):
05:15 - NY Fed President John Williams speaks
08:30 - Durable goods orders (Aug)
10:00 - UMich consumer sentiment, final (Sep) - prelim 47.8, second-lowest on record; 1Y inflation expectations 4.6%. A hot expectations print feeds October-hike pricing.
14:00 - Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack speaks
Rates: 10Y 5.19% / 30Y 5.48% - the single biggest driver right now. Any follow-through above 5.25% on the 10Y is a headwind for the Dow's cyclicals and financials.
Geopolitics: US-Iran phased Hormuz deal talks (headline risk both ways); Trump-Xi summit continues. Iran has warned of a "new front" in the Red Sea if US strikes resume.
Earnings: No Dow component reports scheduled for Friday; Nike (fiscal Q1) typically reports around month-end - watch for the date.

Summary
US30 is in a BEARISH short-term correction: below the 20/50 EMAs, LH/LL structure intact and MACD negative, but the 200 EMA (~50,400) is still rising underneath and RSI is hinting at divergence. Plan: fade rallies into 51,850-51,940 while below 52,300; look for a reaction long only at the 200 EMA. A daily close above 51,940 would flip us to NEUTRAL.

US30 (Dow Jones) Daily Technical Analysis - Wednesday 23 September 2026
Data: Close 23 Sep 2026 | US30: 51,511.59 | Change: -352.10 (-0.68%) | Range: 51,477.53-51,846.81

Market Overview
The Dow gapped lower at the open (51,771 vs Tuesday's 51,863.69 close), failed to get back above 51,850 all session and closed just 34 points off the low. The S&P 500 fell 0.8% to 7,706.03 and the Nasdaq 1.1% to 26,936.04.

Drivers:
- Bond market pressure: 10-year Treasury yield jumped to 5.10% from 4.96%, briefly near 5.14%, the highest since 2007. The 5-year hit 5% for the first time since 2007.
- Hot flash PMI: business activity grew at its fastest pace in more than five years, and input costs rose at the fastest rate in four years. That adds to inflation worries.
- Hawkish Fed: Governor Barr said further hikes "are likely to be needed". CME pricing now puts the odds of a hike at both the October and December meetings above 50%. The Fed raised rates last week for the first time in three years.
- Oil rebound: Brent Nov rose 3.9% to $103.08 on Iran-war supply concerns. US-Iran talks through mediators have produced nothing concrete yet.
- MCD -4.8%: Investor Day plan includes $8.5B of franchisee support through 2036. It was the heaviest single drag on the price-weighted index.
- VIX rose 6.8% to 15.18. That is elevated but not panicky.

Overall Bias: BEARISH short term (below EMA20/50, lower highs). The longer-term uptrend is still intact above EMA200.

Trend Analysis
EMA Stack: EMA20 52,363 · EMA50 52,488 · EMA200 50,306
Classification: Bear (below 20/50): close < EMA20, close < EMA50, close > EMA200.
EMA20 has now crossed below EMA50. Five sessions ago it was 52,748 vs 52,646. Both short EMAs are falling, while EMA200 is still rising.

Market Structure: LH/LL. Since the 54,744 all-time high (5 Aug), the lower highs are 53,820 (28 Aug), 53,746 (3 Sep), 52,751 (14 Sep) and 52,319 (22 Sep). The swing lows have also fallen: 52,755, then 52,691, then 51,187 (16 Sep).
Phase: Correction inside a primary uptrend. The index is down 5.9% from the ATH. For six sessions it has held a 51,187-52,320 range, so the downtrend has become a consolidation just above the 16 Sep low.

Indicators
RSI(14): 38.3 BEARISH, but not oversold. There is no confirmed divergence. On the 16 Sep close (51,462), RSI was 35.0. Today's close is similar (51,512) but RSI is 38.3, and today's intraday low (51,478) is a higher low than 51,187. That is a small positive to watch. A bullish divergence would need a lower low below 51,187 with RSI holding above 35.
MACD(12,26,9): MACD -386 vs signal -273, histogram -112. BEARISH, and MACD is below both the signal line and zero. The histogram has contracted from -194 (14 Sep) to -112 and was flat today, so downside momentum is slowing but has not turned.
Volume: 428M vs 20-day average 448M, which is below average. (The 20-day average is inflated by the 847M quadruple-witching session on 18 Sep.) Today's selling was steady, not capitulation.
ATR(14): 501 points

Key Levels
Resistance:
R1 51,850-51,865: today's high plus the open gap to Tuesday's close
R2 52,130-52,320: 21-22 Sep highs and the top of the six-day range
R3 52,360-52,490: EMA20/EMA50 cluster. A daily close above here would negate the short-term bear case.

Support:
S1 51,480: today's low, also Camarilla S1
S2 51,187: 16 Sep swing low and 60-day low. This is the line in the sand.
S3 50,300: rising EMA200. It is the primary-trend support.

Classic Pivots: S2 51,243 · S1 51,377 · P 51,612 · R1 51,746 · R2 51,981
Camarilla: Cam: S4 51,308 · S3 51,410 · S1 51,478 || R1 51,545 · R3 51,613 · R4 51,715
Round Numbers: 51,000 · 51,500 · 52,000 · 52,500

Notable Dow Components
Strongest (above all three EMAs):
MSFT 500.59 (+0.52%, RSI 56). Tech leader still holding up.
AAPL 337.02 (-0.80%, RSI 63). Strongest RSI in the index, trend intact.
MMM 170.30 (+0.59%, RSI 52). Above all EMAs, one of today's gainers.
JNJ 269.17 (flat, RSI 53) and MRK 148.08 (-1.88%, RSI 57). Defensive healthcare, both above all EMAs.
NVDA 225.51 (-1.47%, RSI 56). Above all EMAs despite today's tech selling.

Weakest (below all three EMAs):
MCD 238.32 (-4.81%, RSI 26). Investor Day spending plan hit margin expectations. Oversold.
HD 296.72 (-2.83%, RSI 26). Pressured by mortgage rates as the 10-year sits above 5%. Oversold.
AXP 301.96 (-1.02%, RSI 27). Oversold.
GS 936.36 (-1.38%, RSI 35). Heavy price weight, still breaking down.
UNH 371.29 (-0.45%, RSI 34). Below all EMAs.

Day's Top Gainers: CRM +1.84% · CVX +1.53% · BA +1.12% · IBM +0.60% · MMM +0.59%
Day's Top Losers: MCD -4.81% · HD -2.83% · AMZN -2.24% · MRK -1.88% · NVDA -1.47%
CVX gained on oil's rebound. Rate-sensitive consumer and financial names led the declines.

Trade Setups - Thursday 24 September
Swing 1 - SHORT: Sell the rally into range resistance
Entry: 52,150 · Stop: 52,560 · T1: 51,190 · T2: 50,400 · R:R: 2.3 / 4.3
Stop is about 0.8 ATR, placed above EMA50 (52,488). This trade follows the LH/LL sequence, with the bearish EMA20/50 cross acting as a lid.
Kill: Daily close above 52,500 (reclaims EMA50), or the 10-year yield falls back below 4.95%.

Swing 2 - LONG: EMA200 mean-reversion (conditional)
Entry: 50,400 (only on a bullish reversal candle at EMA200) · Stop: 49,900 · T1: 51,400 · T2: 52,300 · R:R: 2.0 / 3.8
Stop is about 1 ATR. The primary uptrend is intact and a first test of a rising EMA200 is usually bought.
Kill: Daily close below 49,900, or the 10-year yield breaks above 5.25%.

Intraday 1 - SHORT: Breakdown below today's low
Entry: 51,460 (15m close below Cam S1 51,478) · Stop: 51,590 · T1: 51,310 · T2: 51,190 · R:R: 1.2 / 2.1
T1 is Cam S4. T2 is the 16 Sep swing low. Best triggered after the 13:30 BST jobless claims release if yields keep climbing.
Kill: Price reclaims 51,545 (Cam R1) on a 15m close.

Intraday 2 - LONG: Reclaim of classic R1
Entry: 51,730 (hold above Cam R4 51,715 / R1 51,746) · Stop: 51,600 · T1: 51,865 · T2: 51,980 · R:R: 1.0 / 1.9
T1 fills the gap to Tuesday's close. T2 is classic R2.
Kill: 15m close back below the 51,612 pivot, or the 10-year yield prints above 5.15%.

Upcoming Events
Thu 24 Sep: Initial jobless claims (13:30 BST) · New home sales (15:00 BST). New home sales is a key read for HD after today's -2.8%.
Fri 25 Sep: Advance durable goods (13:30 BST) · UMich consumer sentiment final, including inflation expectations (15:00 BST).
Fed: More than 10 Fed-speaker appearances this week. Barr has already signalled that further hikes are likely. Markets price better-than-even odds of hikes in both October and December.
Next week: GDP third estimate and August PCE inflation (Wed 30 Sep, 13:30 BST). This is the key inflation print before the October FOMC.
Geopolitics: President Xi's state visit to Washington begins this week, with AI, trade, Iran and Taiwan on the agenda. US-Iran talks continue through mediators. Brent above $100 remains a headwind.
Watch: The 10-year yield at 5.10-5.14% is the key driver. A sustained break above 5.14% (the 2007 high) risks a test of 51,187 and then 50,300.

US30 Daily Technical Analysis - Tuesday 22 September 2026
Data: Close 22 Sep 2026 | US30: 51,863.69 | Change: -185.14 (-0.36%) | Range: 51,726-52,319

Market Overview
The Dow opened strongly at 52,302 on the back of Monday's rebound, but sellers took control from the first hour and it closed near the lows at 51,864. That leaves a bearish outside-range session: a 593-point range that faded from the open and gave back most of Monday's +366. The Nasdaq printed a fresh intraday record on the AI trade (Meta's Muse agent) and the Russell 2000 led, so today's Dow weakness was specific to the index. Heavy financials in the price-weighted index were the drag. JPM, AXP, TRV, V and GS all fell as the market kept digesting last week's hawkish Fed hike (the first since 2023). Schwab (-5.7%) and Raymond James (-5%) weighed on brokers.
Oil kept sliding (WTI around $89, Brent below $100) on hopes of US-Iran diplomacy around the UN General Assembly. That helped consumer names (HD, WMT, MCD) but hit CVX. VIX eased to 14.21.
Overall bias: BEARISH short term, corrective within a longer-term uptrend (price is still well above the 200 EMA).

Trend Analysis
EMA stack: EMA20 52,452 · EMA50 52,528 · EMA200 50,294
Classification: Bear (below 20/50). Close is below the 20 and 50 but above the 200. The 20 has crossed below the 50, so the short-term stack is bearish while the long-term trend is intact.
Structure: LH/LL. All-time high 54,744 (5 Aug), then a lower high at 53,820 (28 Aug) and a lower low at 51,187 (16 Sep), breaking the 20 Aug swing low at 52,755. Today's rejection at 52,319 is below both EMAs, so this is the first lower high of the bounce.
Phase: Corrective pullback / consolidation. The Dow is 5.3% below its high and sitting in the 51,200-52,750 box. A move out of that box sets the next leg.

Indicators
RSI(14): 41.5 (from 43.3). Bearish territory but not oversold. The low was 35.0 on 16 Sep. Price has not made a new low since, so there is no divergence signal yet. Watch for a bullish divergence if 51,187 is retested with RSI above 35.
MACD (12,26,9): Line -357.6 below signal -245.3, histogram -112. The histogram has contracted for three sessions (-185 -> -175 -> -135 -> -112), so downside momentum is fading, but there is no bullish cross yet.
Volume: 444.8M vs a 20-day average of 448.3M. That is in line, with no capitulation and no accumulation. Friday's 847M was quad-witching expiry.
Volatility: 14-day ATR = 545 points. VIX 14.21 (-4.4%). Equity volatility is complacent given the Fed hike and geopolitical risk.

Key Levels
Resistance:
R1 52,320-52,450 - today's high and the EMA20. Today's rejection zone.
R2 52,530-52,750 - EMA50, 14 Sep high and the broken 20 Aug swing low. Major supply.
R3 53,820 - 28 Aug lower high. Bulls need a close above here to restore the uptrend.

Support:
S1 51,726 - today's low. Sellers need to break it for follow-through.
S2 51,500-51,540 - 23 Jul swing low plus the 51,500 round number.
S3 51,187 - 16 Sep post-Fed low. The line in the sand for the correction.
Deeper: EMA200 at 50,294.

Classic Pivots: S2 51,377 · S1 51,620 · P 51,970 · R1 52,213 · R2 52,563
Camarilla: Cam: S4 51,538 · S3 51,701 · S1 51,809 || R1 51,918 · R3 52,027 · R4 52,190
Round numbers: 51,500 · 52,000 · 52,500 · 53,000

Notable Dow Components
Top gainers: AMGN +4.34% · HD +2.74% · MMM +2.62% · HON +2.60% · WMT +2.49%
Top losers: CSCO -4.50% · JPM -3.42% · AXP -2.72% · VZ -2.58% · TRV -2.46%

Strongest (Bull, above all three EMAs): AMGN, MMM, KO, MRK, NVDA, AAPL, MSFT, JNJ. Defensives and mega-cap tech are leading.
Weakest (Bear, below all three EMAs): AXP, GS, UNH, BA, IBM, DIS, NKE, MCD, SHW
Bear (below 20/50): JPM, V, TRV, CSCO, CAT, AMZN, VZ. These are high-weight names in a price-weighted index.
Notes: GS (949) and CAT (808) carry the most index weight. Both are below their 20/50 EMAs, which caps any Dow bounce. HD bounced 2.7% but is still below all three EMAs, so treat it as a relief rally for now.

Trade Setups - Next Session (Wed 23 Sep)

Swing 1 - SHORT: Sell the rally into the EMA20/50 cluster
Price is still making lower highs below both EMAs. A retest of 52,450-52,530 gives the best-value short.
Entry: 52,450 · Stop: 52,900 (~0.8 ATR) · T1: 51,730 · T2: 51,200 · R:R: 1.6 / 2.8
Kill: A daily close above 52,750 (reclaims the 50 EMA and the broken swing low).

Swing 2 - LONG: Double-bottom test of the 16 Sep low
Only take this on a bullish reversal candle at 51,187-51,250, ideally with an RSI higher low (bullish divergence).
Entry: 51,250 · Stop: 50,800 (~0.8 ATR) · T1: 52,000 · T2: 52,450 · R:R: 1.7 / 2.7
Kill: A daily close below 51,000.

Intraday 1 - SHORT: Fade the pivot / Cam R3
If the cash open rallies into 51,970-52,027 (daily pivot plus Cam R3) and stalls:
Entry: 51,960 · Stop: 52,200 (above Cam R4) · T1: 51,730 · T2: 51,540 · R:R: 1.0 / 1.75
Kill: A 15-minute close above Cam R4 52,190, which flips it to a breakout long.

Intraday 2 - LONG: Cam S3 reclaim
If the market dips below 51,700 early and then reclaims Cam S3 on a 15-minute close:
Entry: 51,710 · Stop: 51,500 · T1: 51,970 · T2: 52,190 · R:R: 1.2 / 2.3
Kill: A 15-minute close below Cam S4 51,538.

Upcoming Events (next 48h, times UK)
Wed 23 Sep: S&P Global flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs (14:45). Fed Governor Barr speaks (15:05). Meta Connect event is a catalyst for the AI trade.
Thu 24 Sep: Weekly jobless claims (13:30) - key after the hawkish Fed. New home sales (15:00). Fed speakers Williams, Hammack and Paulson.
Fri 25 Sep: Durable goods (13:30). Final UMich sentiment (15:00). The preliminary reading was 47.8, with 1-year inflation expectations at 4.6%.
Fed: 10+ Fed speaker appearances this week after last week's hike. The market is watching for signals on further hikes.
Geopolitics: US-Iran contacts via mediators around UNGA. Tehran says it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days if the US lifts its blockade. Oil headline risk cuts both ways. A Trump-Xi meeting is also anticipated.

Summary: BEARISH below 52,450-52,530. The 51,187 low is the key support. MACD momentum is fading, so a double-bottom test there is the more likely next step before any real recovery. Bulls need a close above 52,750 to change the picture.

Data: Close 21 Sep 2026 | US30: 52,048.83 | Change: +366.19 (+0.71%) | Range: 51,747.68-52,128.58

MARKET OVERVIEW

The Dow closed at 52,048.83, up 366.19 points (+0.71%), reclaiming the 52,000 handle and printing the first higher-high, higher-low session since 11 September.

A word on data quality, because tonight it is better than it has been. Every OHLC figure in this report is a confirmed daily print from the official series: open 51,936.76, high 52,128.58, low 51,747.68, close 52,048.83. Every moving average, RSI, MACD and ATR value is computed from that confirmed series. Unlike Wednesday's report there are no approximated levels and no live-snapshot caveats on the index itself. Volume is not published on the cash index and no volume claim is made anywhere below.

The headline number understates and overstates the session at the same time, and untangling that is the whole job. The Dow rose 0.71%. The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.26% to a record close of 27,122.09. The S&P 500 rose 1.49% to 7,764.70. The Russell 2000 managed +0.52% to 2,875.36. A 155 basis point spread between the Dow and the Nasdaq on an up day is the exact mirror image of Wednesday, when the Dow fell 1.21% and the Nasdaq closed unchanged. The spread has simply reversed sign. The underlying fact has not changed: this is a semiconductor and artificial-intelligence tape, and the Dow is along for the ride rather than driving it.

The rally had two engines and neither of them is a Dow component. Intel closed at 121.78, up 12.14%. Advanced Micro Devices closed at 615.52, up 9.95%, taking its market capitalisation through one trillion dollars. Those two names did more for sentiment than the entire Dow 30 did for the Dow. What reached the index arrived second-hand through Nvidia and Microsoft.

Oil broke, and that is the substantive macro change since Friday. Both benchmarks fell to eleven-day lows. WTI traded down around two percent to the 97.50-98.35 region and Brent around two percent to roughly 101.75. Two drivers, and the first is physical rather than rhetorical: satellite tracking showed Saudi Arabia moved 2.8 million barrels a day through the Strait of Hormuz over the past six days, against roughly 700,000 barrels a day in August. The market had priced the drone damage to the East-West pipeline as a lasting supply loss. It is being rerouted instead. Second, the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York this week and the administration has signalled openness to a meeting with President Pezeshkian, which the tape read as a diplomatic off-ramp to the US-Iran conflict. Brent is still above one hundred dollars. The direction of travel is what changed, not the level.

Bonds confirmed the move and that matters more than the equity print. The 10-year closed at 4.96%, back beneath five percent for the first time since the Fed hiked, with the 30-year at 5.30%. Lower crude feeds directly into the inflation expectations that forced Chair Warsh's hand on Wednesday, and a four basis point retreat at the long end is the clearest statement the bond market has made since the press conference.

Volatility is the number that should give the bears most pause. The VIX settled at 14.87, up 0.41% and effectively unchanged. On FOMC day it printed 17.77. A 5.3% drawdown that never once pushed volatility above eighteen, and which has now let it settle back under fifteen while the index sits four percent off its record, is not a market in distress. It is a market rotating.

Breadth inside the Dow was genuinely good. Twenty of the thirty components advanced, ten declined. That is a marked improvement on the 60.8% declining reading across the broad universe on Wednesday. Gold eased to 4,378.20, down 1.06% and the dollar index firmed fractionally to 100.42.

One non-confirmation, and it is worth flagging rather than burying. The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 0.54% to 19,970.90 while the Industrials rose 0.71%. On a session driven by an eight-dollar fall in crude, transports should have led. They did not. Under classical Dow Theory that is a non-confirmation of today's advance, and until the Transports turn it stays on the ledger.

Overall bias: BULLISH on the primary trend, BEARISH on the intermediate structure, RECOVERING short term. The short-term read is upgraded from BEARISH to RECOVERING. The intermediate read is unchanged and, as the next section explains, has actually deteriorated.

TREND

Computed on the confirmed closing series: EMA20 52,514.27, EMA50 52,555.05, EMA200 50,288.12. Close 52,048.83.

Strict classification: BEARISH - closed below the EMA20 and below the EMA50, but above the EMA200. The index sits 465 points below its EMA20 and 506 points below its EMA50, and 1,761 points above its EMA200. Same strict classification as Wednesday, at roughly one third of the distance.

The cross happened. Wednesday's report identified the 102-point gap between the EMA20 and the EMA50 as "the single most important number in this report" and projected the crossover for "Thursday or Friday". It landed on Friday 18 September, when the gap printed minus 12.44. Tonight it stands at minus 40.78 and is still widening. The sequence reads +334, +293, +248, +189, +102, +44, -12, -41.

This is why the intermediate read does not improve on a 366-point up day. The moving-average stack that every report in this series described as "still bullish, nothing structurally broken" is no longer bullish. It broke on Friday, quietly, while the index was down 95 points and nobody was looking. Price has since rallied 366 points and the stack has gone further negative, because averages lag and the EMA20 is still shedding the large up-closes of late August. Arithmetic already determined by closes already printed says the gap keeps widening for several sessions yet regardless of what price does next.

The one genuine consolation is that the cross has produced an unusually tight resistance shelf. EMA20 at 52,514.27 and EMA50 at 52,555.05 are forty-one points apart. That is a forty-one point band, not two separate levels, and it sits 465 points overhead. Everything in the KEY LEVELS section below is organised around it, because a rally that reaches 52,514 and a rally that reaches 52,555 are the same event.

Extension above the EMA200 has recovered to 3.50%, from 2.32% on Wednesday. The August overextension was fully worked off and the index has bounced before testing the long-term average. The EMA200 was never reached and on this bounce it is no longer the near-term reference.

Market structure, and this is the change of the day. The confirmed daily bars since Wednesday read: 16 Sep high 52,173.70 low 51,186.67 close 51,461.90; 17 Sep high 51,935.97 low 51,607.65 close 51,778.04; 18 Sep high 51,826.78 low 51,497.47 close 51,682.64; tonight high 52,128.58 low 51,747.68 close 52,048.83.

Tonight's high of 52,128.58 exceeds Friday's high of 51,826.78. Tonight's low of 51,747.68 holds above Friday's low of 51,497.47. That is a higher high and a higher low - the first such bar since 11 September, and the first brick of any potential reversal.

It is one brick, and the last one like it failed within two sessions. 11 September printed exactly this pattern and by 16 September the index was 1,111 points lower. The lesson of that failure is specific and it is worth restating: the 11 September bounce died when 14 September touched 52,750.88, failed at what was then the EMA20, and gave back 330 points from the high. The mechanism that killed the last reversal attempt was a failed test of the 20-day average. That same test is now 465 points away.

Two further constructive details in tonight's bar. The index gapped 254 points higher at the open and never filled it - the low of 51,747.68 sits 65 points above Friday's close of 51,682.64. And it closed at 52,048.83 against a high of 52,128.58, which is 79% of the way up a 380.90-point range. Buyers held the bid into the bell rather than fading it.

Against that, the range itself was narrow. 380.90 points against a twenty-day average true range of 503.76 and a twenty-day average high-low range of 405.07. This was a drift higher on an opening gap, not an impulsive reversal bar. Conviction was moderate.

Phase: DOWNTREND inside a primary uptrend, with a first-stage counter-trend bounce in progress. The drawdown from the 5 August record close of 54,349.12 now measures 2,300.29 points, or 4.23%, improved from 5.31% on Wednesday. September month-to-date is -2.14% against the 31 August close of 53,185.90.

What would change the classification: a daily close above the 52,514-52,555 EMA band, followed by a close above 52,750.88, the 14 September high that killed the last bounce. What ends this bounce: loss of tonight's low at 51,747.68, then Friday's low at 51,497.47, then the pullback swing low at 51,186.67.

INDICATORS

RSI(14) closed at 43.32, up from 38.44. The sequence since 10 September reads 38.20, 44.85, 43.35, 40.22, 34.99, 39.25, 38.44, 43.32.

Two observations, and they pull in opposite directions. The constructive one: the 34.99 low registered on 16 September has not been retested, and RSI has now put in two consecutive higher readings while price made its own higher low. Momentum and price turned up together, which is the same alignment that preceded the 11 September bounce.

The cautionary one is the same point Wednesday made from the other side. At no stage of this 4.2% drawdown did RSI reach 30. The lowest print was 34.99. No oversold condition ever registered, which means no exhaustion signal ever fired, which means this bounce is starting from a mid-range momentum reading rather than from a washout. At 43.32 the indicator is neutral. It is not a buy signal and it is not a sell signal. It also has to clear 50 before any of this is more than a bounce, and 50 has not been touched since 3 September.

MACD produced the single most encouraging signal on this page, and it needs to be stated precisely because it is easy to overclaim. The line stands at -352.10 against a signal of -217.19 for a histogram of -134.91.

All three remain negative and the line remains below the signal. There has been no bullish crossover and nothing here is yet a buy. What has changed is the derivative.

First, the MACD line turned up for the first time in this decline: -358.88 on Friday to -352.10 tonight. The sequence since 10 September reads -101.29, -125.00, -154.28, -201.63, -286.79, -325.02, -358.88, -352.10. Seven consecutive sessions of deterioration, then a reversal. That is the first positive print in the first difference since this began.

Second, the histogram has narrowed for three consecutive sessions: -193.53, -185.41, -175.41, -134.91. Tonight's forty-point improvement is more than twice the size of either of the previous two. Histogram contraction is the earliest of the standard MACD signals and it is the only one currently firing.

What has to happen next for this to matter. The signal line at -217.19 is falling and the MACD line at -352.10 is rising. The gap is 134.91 points and closing. On the current rate of contraction a bullish crossover would arrive within two to four sessions if the improvement holds. That crossover, beneath the zero line, would be the first formal momentum buy signal of the entire pullback. Until it prints, the configuration on any standard reading is still bearish.

Volatility. ATR(14) stands at 503.76 points, roughly 0.97% of index value, and is beginning to roll over as the daily ranges compress. Tonight's 380.90-point range was the narrowest since 11 September. Every stop in the setups below is sized against that ATR.

No volume reading is quoted. The cash index does not publish one.

KEY LEVELS

Resistance

52,128.58 - tonight's confirmed high, and the immediate line in the sand. Nothing constructive happens on Tuesday until it goes.
52,514.27 to 52,555.05 - the EMA20 and EMA50 band, forty-one points wide. This is the most important zone on the page. It is where the crossed averages sit, it is the level that killed the 11 September bounce in a different guise, and it is where a counter-trend rally either converts into a trend change or dies.
52,750.88 - the 14 September confirmed high. The last swing high of the decline and the definitive level. A close above it and the six-week sequence of lower highs is broken.

Support

51,747.68 - tonight's confirmed low, and the entire bull case in one number. It is the higher low. Lose it and tonight's bar is voided.
51,497.47 - Friday's confirmed low, and the last defended level before the pullback low.
51,186.67 - the 16 September confirmed low and the swing low of the whole six-week decline. Beneath it there is no structure until the 51,000 handle and then the EMA200 at 50,288.

Round numbers
52,000 reclaimed tonight and now the first psychological floor, sitting just 14 points beneath the pivot at 51,975 - treat the two as one shelf. 52,500 is effectively the EMA band. 51,500 coincides with Friday's low. 51,000 is the next clean handle below the pullback low.

NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS

Strict EMA classification applied to every component on confirmed closes.

Strongest - above the EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200

NVDA 227.38, +2.30% - the bridge between the semiconductor tape and the index. Strongest Dow component on the day and structurally the cleanest.
AMZN 258.45, +1.87% - above all three and second-best performer.
MSFT 501.61, +1.59% - reclaimed and held the 500 handle.
MRK 149.50, +1.79% - the non-technology name in this group, which is what makes it interesting.
AAPL 338.98, +0.85% - above all three, participating without leading.
JNJ 269.47, -0.19% - the only component that is above all three averages and fell today. Defensive bid unwinding at the margin.

Weakest - below the EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200

NKE 36.10, +1.66% - a 1.66% gain changes nothing about a chart below all three averages. Nike reports after the close on Thursday 24 September and is the only Dow component with earnings this week.
BA 201.15, +1.49% - bouncing from a broken structure.
IBM 231.93, +1.04% - below all three despite the technology bid.
AXP 313.59, +0.65% - the consumer-credit read, and it is not confirming.
HD 297.20, -0.93% - below all three and falling on an up day. The rate-sensitive housing read.
HON 206.48, +0.01% - unchanged to four decimal places on a 366-point index gain.
MCD 247.88, -0.15% and SHW 321.31, +0.18% complete the group.

The attribution is unambiguous and it is the same attribution as Wednesday with the sign flipped. Six components sit above all three averages and four of the six are technology or technology-adjacent. Eight sit below all three and they are industrials, consumer discretionary, retail and rate-sensitives. Twenty of thirty components rose today and the majority of the risers are still structurally broken. A one-day advance does not repair an EMA stack.

Notable decliners. CVX 203.67, -2.79% was the worst component by a wide margin and it is the direct read-through from the crude collapse - the same news that helped the index hurt one of its members. KO 87.12, -1.28%, TRV 371.13, -0.93% and VZ 47.68, -0.85% round out the defensives being sold to fund risk.

One recovery worth noting. GS 959.39, +1.85%. Goldman was among the worst-hit names in the post-FOMC financials repricing. A 4.96% ten-year and a firmer curve are exactly what it needed. It is not yet above all three averages, but it is the financial to watch if the bond move extends.

TRADE SETUPS

All levels from confirmed prints. Stops are ATR-based against an ATR(14) of 503.76.

SWING LONG - continuation of the bounce

The higher-high-higher-low bar, the unfilled gap and the close in the top fifth of the range are the case. The target is the EMA band, not beyond it.
Entry: 52,050 on any hold above 51,975 Stop: 51,715 T1: 52,514 T2: 52,750 R:R: 1.39 to T1, 2.09 to T2
Kill condition: any daily close back beneath 51,747.68. That voids the higher low and with it the entire premise.

SWING SHORT - fade the EMA band

The higher-probability swing on the page, because it trades with the intermediate trend rather than against it. This is the 14 September trade in its current location.
Entry: 52,520 on first touch of the band Stop: 52,790 T1: 52,050 T2: 51,750 R:R: 1.74 to T1, 2.85 to T2
Kill condition: any daily close above 52,555.05. A close through the band is a trend change, not a failed test, and the short is wrong.

INTRADAY LONG - pivot hold

Entry: 51,990 on a hold of the 51,975 pivot and the 52,000 handle Stop: 51,880 T1: 52,128 T2: 52,202 R:R: 1.25 to T1, 1.93 to T2
Kill condition: any acceptance beneath Camarilla S4 at 51,839.33.

INTRADAY SHORT - rejection at R1

Entry: 52,150 on rejection at Camarilla R3 and the classic R1 at 52,202 Stop: 52,265 T1: 51,975 T2: 51,821 R:R: 1.52 to T1, 2.86 to T2
Kill condition: acceptance above Camarilla R4 at 52,258.32.

Position-sizing note. With ATR at 503.76 and tonight's range at 380.90, ranges are compressing into a heavy Fed-speaker calendar. Compressed ranges ahead of scheduled commentary expand violently. Size the intraday setups smaller than the stop distances alone would suggest.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Tuesday 22 September - Chicago Fed National Activity Index. Second-tier, unlikely to move the index on its own.

Wednesday 23 September - the week's data cluster. Current Account, then the S&P Global flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs, the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, and the API crude inventory report. The flash PMIs are the release that matters: they are the first read on September activity and the services print carries the prices-paid component the Fed is now explicitly focused on.

Federal Reserve speakers - the dominant risk this week. The calendar is light on data and heavy on Fed officials, with around ten scheduled appearances. This is the first full week of commentary since Wednesday's 12-0 hike to 3.75%-4.00% and since a Chair who declined to give forward guidance. The dot plot median carries one further hike this year and, as noted on Wednesday, a single voting member's revision would have flipped the 2027 median. Every speaker is a chance for the market to learn which side of that margin the committee actually sits on. Expect headline risk on any hawkish phrasing.

Earnings. AutoZone on Tuesday. Cintas and General Mills on Wednesday. Costco and Nike after the close on Thursday 24 September - Nike is the only Dow component reporting and it enters the print below all three of its moving averages, which raises the downside asymmetry. Micron on 30 September falls outside this window but is the semiconductor event that will set the tone for the AI complex into month-end.

Geopolitics. The United Nations General Assembly is under way in New York and the US-Iran conflict is the file to watch. The crude market has already begun pricing a diplomatic path; confirmation of a meeting would extend tonight's oil move and, by extension, the relief in yields. The converse is equally true and the risk is two-sided: Brent remains above one hundred dollars and a breakdown in talks reprices it higher in a single session. A US-China summit in Washington is also scheduled this week.

What to watch first on Tuesday. Whether 51,975 and the 52,000 handle hold as support on the first pullback. That single question decides whether tonight's higher low becomes structure or becomes another 11 September.

FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
Data: Close 18 Sep 2026 | US30: 51,682.64 | Change: -95.40 (-0.18%) | Range: 51,497.47-51,826.78

MARKET OVERVIEW

The Dow closed at 51,682.64, down 95.40 points (-0.18%), on a session range of just 329 points. The open was 51,826.78 - and that open was also the high of the day. Price never traded a tick above the opening print, drifted to 51,497.47 by mid-session, then recovered to close at 56% of the range.

That is a quadruple-witching Friday, so read the volume with care: 847.0m shares against a 20-day average of 426.6m, a ratio of 1.99x. That is expiry mechanics, not conviction.

The Dow was the laggard again. S&P 500 +0.17% to 7,650.50. Nasdaq Composite +0.39% to 26,522.54. For the third session running the price-weighted index has been held back by its financials and legacy industrials while megacap tech carried the broad market.

Positive - Crude cracked. WTI fell 6.29% to $95.50 and Brent 5.78% to $98.76, the largest single-day break in the move and a decisive rejection of Tuesday's $105.83 spike. Oil is the exact variable the Fed named as the inflation problem, so this matters. VIX fell 4.08% to 14.81, its lowest close of the month. Gold +0.49% to $4,421.10.

Negative - The 10-year Treasury yield added about 5bp back to 5.006%, holding the 5% line after briefly easing Thursday. That is the highest yield regime since July 2007. Wednesday's FOMC raised the funds target 25bp to 3.75-4.00%, the first hike since 2023, on a 12-0 vote, with 16 of 19 officials projecting at least one more hike this year. Goldman Sachs alone took 58 index points out of the Dow.

Week: -890.65 points, -1.69%. A third consecutive losing week. The index is 5.59% below the 5 August all-time high of 54,744.33.

Overall bias: BEARISH on the daily, but with the first genuine signs of deceleration. Crude breaking and the VIX at 14.81 are not the fingerprints of a market in distress.

TREND

EMA stack, daily, on the cash index:
EMA20 52,563.26 · EMA50 52,575.67 · EMA200 50,237.77

Close 51,682.64 is below EMA20, below EMA50, and above EMA200.
Strict classification: BEAR - below the 20 and 50, above the 200.

The headline event on the stack is that EMA20 crossed below EMA50 today - 52,563.26 against 52,575.67, a margin of 12.41 points. That is the first time the 20 has sat under the 50 since 17 April 2026. Five months of an unbroken bullish short-term stack ended on this close. It is a fresh cross and a thin one, so it can be unwound quickly, but it is a real change of state rather than noise.

Context matters in the other direction too. The 200-day EMA is 50,237.77 and the 200-day SMA is 50,102.92. The close is 3.15% above the 200-day SMA. The primary uptrend has not been touched. This is a correction inside a bull structure, not a bear market. The 50-day SMA at 52,881.61 is the level that would need reclaiming to say otherwise.

Market structure: Lower highs and lower lows from the 3 September swing high at 53,746.50. Daily highs in sequence: 53,746 (3 Sep), 53,635 (4 Sep), 53,110 (8 Sep), 52,750 (14 Sep), 52,337 (15 Sep), 52,174 (16 Sep), 51,936 (17 Sep), 51,827 (18 Sep). Eight consecutive lower highs.

The lows tell a slightly different story. 51,186.67 on 16 Sep, then 51,607.65, then 51,497.47. Two higher lows against Wednesday's flush. Price is compressing between a falling ceiling and a flattening floor.

Phase: COILING INSIDE A SHORT-TERM DOWNTREND. Thursday's range was 328.3 points, Friday's 329.3 - two near-identical narrow sessions against a 14-day ATR of 508.21. Ranges contracting to roughly 65% of ATR immediately after a 987-point Fed-day bar is a coil. Coils resolve with expansion. The direction of that expansion is the whole question for Monday.

INDICATORS

RSI(14): 38.44, down from 39.25. The 60-day low was 34.99 on Wednesday's close, so RSI never reached a classic oversold reading on the cash index during this entire decline. It remains well below the 50 midline and it ticked lower today even as price held.

Divergence check: none. Wednesday's price low at 51,186.67 was matched by the RSI low at 34.99 - momentum confirmed the price low. Price has since made higher lows and RSI has made a higher low with it. That is confirmation, not divergence. There is no hidden bullish setup to lean on, and equally no bearish divergence at the highs. The indicator is simply weak and agreeing with price.

MACD(12,26,9): MACD line -358.88, signal -183.46, histogram -175.41. Both lines below zero, MACD below signal, no crossover. But the histogram has now narrowed for two straight sessions - -193.53, then -185.41, then -175.41. The MACD line is still falling, so this is deceleration rather than a turn. The signal line is chasing it down. A cross would need several sessions of flat-to-higher closes; it is not close.

ADX(14): 19.13 and rising, with -DI 36.30 dominant over +DI 16.41. ADX below 25 says the directional trend is not yet strong by the classic reading, despite a wide DI spread. This is an important correction to make: the move down has been fast but it has not built the trend strength that would warn against fading it. A rising ADX from a low base with -DI on top is a trend attempting to establish itself, not one already established.

ATR(14): 508.21. Elevated against the sub-400 readings of late August. Size positions off this number, not off Friday's 329-point range.

Volume: 1.99x the 20-day average, distorted by quadruple witching. Discount it entirely as a signal.

KEY LEVELS

Resistance
51,826.78 - Friday's open and high. Rejected on the first tick. First test on any Monday strength.
51,935.97 - Thursday's high. The near-term swing ceiling; a daily close above it breaks the eight-bar sequence of lower highs.
52,545-52,580 - the level that matters. Triple confluence: 38.2% retracement of the 54,744-51,187 decline at 52,545.70, EMA20 at 52,563.26 and EMA50 at 52,575.67 all inside 35 points. This is where a bounce should fail if the downtrend is intact.

Support
51,497.47 - Friday's low, and effectively the same as Camarilla S4 at 51,501.52.
51,300-51,550 - a genuine demand shelf. Holds the 23 July swing low at 51,542.06 and the 23 June swing low at 51,301.77. Price spent weeks building this zone on the way up.
51,186.67 - the 16 Sep Fed-day low and the line in the sand. Below it the structure of higher lows is dead and the measured move opens up.

Classic pivots, for Monday 21 Sep:
S2 51,339.65 · S1 51,511.15 · P 51,668.96 · R1 51,840.46 · R2 51,998.28

Camarilla: S4 51,501.52 · S3 51,592.08 · S1 51,652.45 || R1 51,712.83 · R3 51,773.20 · R4 51,863.76

Round numbers: 51,500 sits inside Friday's low and Camarilla S4 - a magnet. 52,000 caps the 23.6% retracement at 52,026.28. 51,000 is the first psychological floor below the 16 Sep low.

Note how tight the Camarilla band is: R4 to S4 spans only 362 points. Friday's range was so compressed that Monday's pivot set offers very little room. Expect these levels to be taken out early if the coil resolves with any force.

NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS

Strongest - above EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200
AAPL $336.13 (-0.26%) - the standout. Up 8.0% over 20 sessions and only 2.4% below its 52-week high while the index sits 5.6% below its own. Carrying the index.
NVDA $222.27 (+1.34%) - above all three EMAs, +2.5% over 20 sessions, 6.0% off its high. Third-largest positive contributor Friday at +18 index points.
MSFT $493.78 (-0.80%) - technically above all three but the close is only 49 cents above the EMA20 at 493.29. On the edge. Cost the index 24 points Friday.
JNJ $269.99 and MRK $146.87 - defensives holding full bullish stacks, consistent with a market pricing higher-for-longer rates.
TRV $374.62 (-1.28%) - above all EMAs but took 30 index points out on the day.
CVX $209.51 (-0.97%) - above all three EMAs and 3.8% off its high, but this one now carries real risk. A 6.29% break in WTI has not been fully discounted in the energy names.

Weakest - below EMA20, EMA50 and EMA200
NKE $35.51 (-2.34%) - the worst chart in the index by distance. 53.9% below its 52-week high and down 11.7% in 20 sessions. No support visible.
HD $299.98 (-0.84%) - 28.3% off its high, -10.3% over 20 sessions. Lost the 300 handle on the close. A rate-sensitive housing read and it is failing badly.
MCD $248.24 (-0.10%) - 27.4% off its high. The consumer complex is broken across HD, MCD and NKE simultaneously, which is a signal in itself.
IBM $229.55 (-3.45%) - the biggest percentage loser in the index Friday and -50 index points. 31.0% below its 52-week high.
GS $942.00 (-1.00%) - the single largest drag at -58 index points, purely on price weight. 18.4% off its high and below all three EMAs. With the 10-year at 5%, the market is not treating this as a rate winner.
BA, HON, AXP, SHW, WMT - all below all three EMAs. WMT is 21.0% off its high, which is not what a defensive retailer should look like.

Friday's index contribution, top and bottom:
Up: CAT +64 pts · AMGN +36 pts · NVDA +18 pts · AMZN +16 pts · UNH +10 pts
Down: GS -58 pts · IBM -50 pts · CRM -30 pts · TRV -30 pts · MSFT -24 pts · DIS -17 pts · HD -16 pts

The breadth read is poor but not uniform. CAT alone added 64 points and still the index closed red. Eleven of the 30 components sit below all three EMAs; seven sit above all three.

Earnings: The Dow calendar is empty through the first half of next week. NKE is the first index constituent up, expected 29 Sep to 1 Oct - worth watching given the chart, but not a Monday consideration.

TRADE SETUPS

SWING 1 - Bearish continuation (primary)
The trend-aligned trade. Requires the coil to break down and the 16 Sep low to give way. Do not pre-empt it.
Trigger: daily close below 51,186.67
Entry: 51,150 · Stop: 51,560 · T1: 50,600 · T2: 50,240 · R:R: 1.34 to T1, 2.22 to T2
Stop is 410 points, roughly 0.8x ATR, sited above the midpoint of Friday's range. T2 is the 200-day EMA at 50,237.77, the first structurally significant support below the shelf.
Kill condition: any daily close back above 51,550 after entry. A failed breakdown through a three-week shelf snaps back hard.

SWING 2 - Bullish reversal (contingent)
Only valid if Monday breaks the sequence of lower highs. The narrowing MACD histogram, the two higher lows and a VIX at 14.81 are the argument for it.
Trigger: daily close above 51,935.97
Entry: 51,960 · Stop: 51,680 · T1: 52,400 · T2: 52,750 · R:R: 1.57 to T1, 2.82 to T2
T2 stops deliberately short of the 52,545-52,580 confluence band. Do not hold a long into the EMA20/EMA50/38.2% cluster and expect it to give way at the first attempt.
Kill condition: close back below 51,600, or rejection wick from 52,545 on rising volume.

INTRADAY 1 - Short below the pivot
Trigger: loss of Camarilla S3 with a 15-minute close below it
Entry: 51,585 · Stop: 51,695 · T1: 51,502 · T2: 51,340 · R:R: 0.75 to T1, 2.23 to T2
Take half at S4 51,502, which is also Friday's low, then trail to classic S2. Stop sits above the daily pivot at 51,668.96.
Kill condition: reclaim of 51,669 on the 15-minute close.

INTRADAY 2 - Long above the pivot
Trigger: 15-minute close above Camarilla R1 51,712.83, holding the pivot as support
Entry: 51,715 · Stop: 51,620 · T1: 51,827 · T2: 51,936 · R:R: 1.18 to T1, 2.33 to T2
T1 is Friday's open and high, the level that rejected every attempt. T2 is Thursday's high and the swing ceiling. Clearing T2 on a daily close is also the Swing 2 trigger.
Kill condition: loss of 51,620, which puts price back under both the pivot and Camarilla S1.

Position sizing note: ATR is 508 and Monday's pivot band spans only 362 points. Stops sized to Friday's narrow range will be too tight for the expansion a coil produces. Size down rather than tighten up.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Immediate: Nothing scheduled over the weekend. The gap risk is headline risk - specifically oil. WTI's 6.29% break came on supply headlines; any weekend reversal in that story reprices the whole inflation trade on Monday's open, in either direction.

Next week: The FOMC blackout is over, so Fed speakers are free to talk and will be the dominant intraday risk all week. After a 12-0 hike with 16 of 19 officials projecting another, every speech is a chance to shift the odds on the next move. Treat unscheduled Fed commentary as the main volatility source.

Data-wise the week builds to the August core PCE release at the back end - the Fed's preferred gauge, and the number that either validates or undermines Wednesday's hike. Core PCE has accelerated from 3.0% in December 2025 to 3.3% in July 2026. Ahead of it: flash S&P Global PMIs mid-week, durable goods orders, the final Q2 GDP revision, consumer confidence and weekly claims. Confirm exact release times on the ChartsView economic calendar - the schedule around PCE shifts.

The bond market is the tell. The 10-year at 5.006% is the highest since July 2007 and it is the single variable driving the Dow's underperformance against the S&P and Nasdaq. Financials and rate-sensitive consumer names carry outsized price weight in this index. Watch the yield, not the equity tape.

Earnings: no Dow constituents in the first half of the week. NKE is first up, expected 29 Sep to 1 Oct.

Geopolitics: the oil supply story remains the live wire. Friday's break was driven by supply-side relief; that relief is reversible on a single headline.

THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2026
Data: Close 17 Sep 2026 | US30: 51,779.47 | Change: +316.92 (+0.62%) | Range: 51,607.65-51,935.97

MARKET OVERVIEW

The Dow closed at 51,779.47, up 316.92 points (+0.62%), recovering roughly half of Wednesday's 631-point Fed-day rout. The session range was just 328 points against Wednesday's 986 - an inside day, and a narrow one. Price opened at 51,882.53, faded to 51,607.65 inside the first two hours, tagged 51,935.97, then drifted into the close without conviction.

The Dow was the laggard of the majors. S&P 500 +1.07% to 7,632.52, Nasdaq Composite +1.67%, Russell 2000 +0.5-1.1%. Breadth favoured tech and cyclicals; the Dow's price-weighted financials and legacy names capped it.

Drivers:
Positive - Oil retreated for a second session. WTI fell 1.7% to $100.70, Brent 2.1% to $103.60, after US Energy Secretary Chris Wright flagged a faster restart for Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline and Saudi Arabia offered extra cargoes to Asian refiners via ship-to-ship transfers off Sohar. The 10-year Treasury yield eased 5bp to 4.94%. VIX collapsed 9-12% to the 15.6-16.2 area from Wednesday's spike.
Negative - Wednesday's FOMC raised the funds target 25bp to 3.75-4.00%, the first hike since July 2023, unanimously, and 16 of 18 officials now project at least one more hike this year. Chair Kevin Warsh: inflation "is too high and has been for too long." That is a genuine regime change and it is not priced out of a one-day bounce.

Overall bias: BEARISH on the daily. Thursday was a relief bounce inside an intact downtrend, not a reversal.

TREND

EMA stack (daily, rolled to Thursday's close):
EMA20 52,007 · EMA50 52,301 · EMA200 52,829

Close 51,779.47 is below EMA20, below EMA50 and below EMA200. Strict classification: BEAR - below all three. The stack itself is in full bearish sequence, EMA20 < EMA50 < EMA200, which only completed in the last week. The 200-day simple average sits higher again at 53,125.

Market structure: Lower highs and lower lows since the 3 September swing high of 53,746.50. Sequence of daily highs: 53,746 (3 Sep), 53,635 (4 Sep), 53,110 (8 Sep), 52,750 (14 Sep), 52,336 (15 Sep), 52,173 (16 Sep), 51,936 (17 Sep). Every single one lower.

Thursday did print the first higher low of the move - 51,607.65 against Wednesday's 51,186.67 - but it failed to take out Wednesday's high of 52,172.82. One higher low inside a run of seven consecutive lower highs is not a structure break. It is a pause.

The index is 5.41% below the 52-week high of 54,744.33 and down 2.95% on the month.

Phase: CORRECTIVE REBOUND INSIDE A SHORT-TERM DOWNTREND. Not consolidation, not reversal - the downtrend still owns the tape until 52,173 goes.

INDICATORS

RSI(14): approximately 33.8, up from 28.8 at Wednesday's close. It briefly registered an oversold reading below 30 on the Fed-day flush and has lifted off it, but is still well under the 50 midline. Divergence check: none. Wednesday's price low was accompanied by the RSI low - momentum confirmed the price low rather than diverging from it. There is no bullish divergence to lean on here, which matters: oversold in a trending market is a continuation signal more often than a reversal signal.

MACD(12,26): approximately -150, unchanged day-over-day and still below both the zero line and its signal line. The histogram remains negative. Thursday's bounce was not large enough to bend the momentum curve - the histogram flattened rather than turned. No crossover, no buy trigger.

ADX(14): 35.8. Above 25 and rising, confirming a strong directional trend is in force - and with -DI dominant, that trend is down. This is the single most important indicator on the board right now: strong-trend readings argue against fading the direction.

ATR(14): approximately 497 points. Volatility is elevated - the 14-day average true range has roughly doubled from its August pace. Size positions accordingly; a 200-point stop is now well inside the noise band.

Volume: Wednesday's 631-point decline traded 394.4m shares against a three-month average of 496.8m - that is below-average participation on the down day, the one mildly constructive datapoint in the technical picture. Conviction selling has not shown up yet. Watch whether Friday's expiry volume arrives on the bid or the offer.

KEY LEVELS

Resistance
51,936 - Thursday's session high. First hurdle, and it caps the immediate bounce.
52,007-52,090 - EMA20 (52,007) and SMA20 (52,013) cluster, reinforced by the 52,000 round number. Reclaiming this zone on a daily close is the minimum required to neutralise the short-term downtrend.
52,173 - Wednesday's high. The structural line. A daily close above it breaks the seven-day lower-high sequence. Above that, EMA50 at 52,301 and the 52,573 swing from 11 September.

Support
51,608 - Thursday's low, and the higher low that defines the bounce. Loses its meaning the moment it goes.
51,463 - Wednesday's close, and the gap-fill reference from Thursday's open.
51,187 - Wednesday's low. The line in the sand. Below it there is little structural support until the 51,000 round number and then a fairly clean run toward 50,000.

Classic pivots (for Friday, from Thursday's 51,935.97 / 51,607.65 / 51,779.47):
S2 51,446 · S1 51,613 · P 51,774 · R1 51,941 · R2 52,103

Camarilla: S4 51,599 · S3 51,689 · S1 51,749 || R1 51,810 · R3 51,870 · R4 51,960

Round numbers in play: 52,000 (overhead, coincides with the 20-day averages), 51,500, 51,000.

NOTABLE DOW COMPONENTS

Strongest
Merck (MRK) - the Dow's 2026 leader, still extending on the Phase 3 readout for intismeran autogene, the personalised mRNA cancer vaccine partnered with Moderna. Moderna itself added 9.4%.
Nvidia (NVDA) - +2.55% to $219.35. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan told an industry event the memory bottleneck "will be worse" in 2027, lifting the whole semi complex.
Amazon (AMZN) - +2.17% to $251.30, helped by its up-to-$8bn backup-generator supply agreement with Generac for AI data centres. GNRC itself finished up 21%.
Caterpillar (CAT) - +2.60% at the open, the top Dow contributor early and one of the index's strongest names of 2026 alongside Cisco.
Microsoft (MSFT) - +1.57% to $498.01.

Weakest
Salesforce (CRM) - -4.30%, the single heaviest drag on the Dow and the main reason the index lagged the S&P by 45bp.
Goldman Sachs (GS) - down a second session (-3.92% Wednesday, -0.80% Thursday). Rate-sensitive and carrying the hawkish-Fed repricing.
IBM - -4.32% Wednesday, no meaningful recovery Thursday.
Boeing (BA) - -3.69% Wednesday.
Walmart (WMT) - -0.47%, defensive names offered no bid on a risk-on day.

Earnings: no notable Dow-component reports Thursday, and none scheduled Friday. The index is trading on macro, not fundamentals, this week.

TRADE SETUPS

SWING 1 - SHORT THE RETEST (with trend)
Sell rallies into the EMA20/SMA20 and 52,000 confluence. This is the primary setup - it trades in the direction of an ADX of 35.8.
Entry: 52,050 · Stop: 52,320 · T1: 51,610 · T2: 51,190 · R:R: 1.6 to T1, 3.2 to T2
Risk 270 points, roughly 0.55 ATR. Stop sits above the EMA50.
Kill condition: any daily close above 52,300. If the EMA50 is reclaimed the thesis is void - do not average into it.

SWING 2 - LONG ON STRUCTURE BREAK (counter-trend, confirmation required)
Do not pre-empt this one. It requires a daily close above Wednesday's 52,173 high, which would end the lower-high sequence.
Entry: 52,200 on confirmed daily close · Stop: 51,900 · T1: 52,570 · T2: 52,830 · R:R: 1.2 to T1, 2.1 to T2
T2 is the EMA200, which is where a counter-trend bounce should be expected to stall.
Kill condition: failure to hold 52,000 within two sessions of the breakout, or an intraday reversal back under 51,936.

INTRADAY 1 - FADE THE HIGH
Short into the Camarilla R4 and Thursday's high, targeting the pivot then the session low.
Entry: 51,930 · Stop: 52,060 · T1: 51,775 · T2: 51,613 · R:R: 1.2 to T1, 2.4 to T2
Kill condition: 15-minute close above 52,010.

INTRADAY 2 - CAMARILLA S3 BOUNCE
Long the 51,689-51,599 Camarilla S3/S4 band while Thursday's higher low holds. Tight and mechanical.
Entry: 51,650 · Stop: 51,520 · T1: 51,780 · T2: 51,940 · R:R: 1.0 to T1, 2.2 to T2
Kill condition: 15-minute close below 51,560, or any clean break of 51,608 on expanding volume - at that point the higher low is gone and the short side takes over.

Risk note: with ATR at roughly 497 points and quadruple witching on Friday, intraday stops under 120 points will be noise-stopped. Halve normal position size or stand aside until the expiry is cleared.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday 18 September
QUADRUPLE WITCHING - September index and single-stock options and futures all expire, alongside the quarterly S&P index rebalance. Expect inflated volume, gamma pinning into round strikes and unreliable price signals until the afternoon. Treat Friday's close as more informative than Friday's intraday action.
Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization, August (Fed G.17 release).

Already out Thursday
Philadelphia Fed business outlook (28.6 expected against 47.4 prior), initial jobless claims (206k prior), housing starts and building permits. Pending home sales rose 0.3% month-on-month but fell 4.7% year-on-year, a softer read than the 3.9% decline forecast - mortgage-rate sensitivity is biting.

Fed
The post-FOMC blackout has now lifted, so officials can speak again. With 16 of 18 projecting at least one further hike, any speaker who firms up or softens that second hike is a live catalyst. Warsh's "second and third-round effects" framing on the energy shock is the reference text.

Geopolitics and energy
The Iran conflict is in its seventh month. Trump said Wednesday the US is "hopefully" nearing the end and claimed direct contact with Tehran. Saudi Arabia is restoring roughly half the East-West pipeline's capacity within days and full operations in about six weeks. Strait of Hormuz seven-day average flows are running at 11m barrels a day. US diesel hit a record $6.39 a gallon, and speculation is building around a pre-midterm diesel export ban. Oil remains the transmission channel into inflation and therefore into Fed policy - it is the variable that matters most to this index right now.

Elsewhere
The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75% with three dissenters voting for a hike; Governor Bailey warned energy-driven inflation may force its hand. Trump threatened "very heavy tariffs" on the EU over its proposal to make Canada an associate member. The SEC issued an Innovation Exemption creating a five-year regulatory pathway for tokenised US stocks.

Earnings: nothing material from the Dow 30 until the late-October cycle.
