A derivative is a financial contract whose value comes from something else, such as a share, an index, a currency or a commodity. Common types are futures, options, forwards, CFDs and spread bets. Derivatives let traders profit from prices going up or down and often use leverage, so gains and losses can be much larger than the money put down. Businesses and investors also use them to hedge risk.
